Where to Stay in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is more walkable and more village-like than Cancún, with 5th Avenue (La Quinta Avenida) as its spine — a pedestrianised street running parallel to the beach for several kilometres. Where you stay determines how much walking you do to the beach and whether you’re in the middle of the nightlife or removed from it.

5th Avenue North (above Calle 38)
Best for: quieter nights, direct beach access, couples and families
The northern stretch of 5th Avenue has fewer bars and clubs than the central section. The beach is a short walk through the hotel properties, and the pace is considerably calmer. Newer boutique properties have concentrated here in recent years.
Mid-range: Indigo Hotel (from approximately MXN $2,500/night) is a adults-only boutique with a rooftop pool and design-led rooms close to the beach. Be Playa Hotel (from approximately MXN $2,000/night) is a smaller property with good service and a short walk to the beach. Hotel Blue Parrot (from approximately MXN $2,800/night) has direct beach access and a popular beach bar.
Luxury: Viceroy Riviera Maya (from approximately MXN $8,000/night) sits just north of the main town in private jungle grounds — plunge pools in many villas, and a strong restaurant. Rosewood Mayakoba (from approximately MXN $12,000/night) is technically in Playa del Carmen municipality and is one of Mexico’s finest resort experiences.
5th Avenue Central (Calle 10–38)
Best for: first-time visitors, nightlife, maximum restaurant access
This is the heart of Playa del Carmen — the most concentrated stretch of restaurants, bars, boutiques, and tour operators. The beach is one to three blocks west. The trade-off is noise: Friday and Saturday nights can be very loud until 3–4 am if your hotel is close to the main clubs.
Budget: Hostel Playa (from approximately MXN $400/night for dorms, MXN $950/night for privates) is one of the better-reviewed hostels on the Quinta strip. Jungle Hostel (from approximately MXN $350/night dorms) has a small pool and social atmosphere.
Mid-range: Hotel Bric (from approximately MXN $2,200/night) is a well-positioned boutique directly on 5th Avenue with a rooftop terrace. Aldea Thai (from approximately MXN $3,500/night) has bungalow-style accommodation in a garden setting, one block from the beach. La Tortuga Hotel & Spa (from approximately MXN $2,600/night) occupies a quiet garden property close to the ferry terminal.
Luxury: Thompson Playa del Carmen (from approximately MXN $6,000/night) has an excellent rooftop pool and bar, with views across the 5th Avenue strip. One of the more stylish properties in this section.
Playacar
Best for: families, all-inclusive holidays, quieter resort experience
Playacar is a gated zone immediately south of downtown Playa, with large resort hotels, a golf course, and manicured grounds. It has its own beach access and feels more like Cancún’s Hotel Zone than downtown Playa. To reach the 5th Avenue restaurants and the Cozumel ferry, plan on a 20-minute walk or a MXN $60–80 taxi ride.
Mid-range to luxury: Sandos Caracol Eco Resort (from approximately MXN $3,500/night, all-inclusive) has cenotes on the property and eco-focused activities — one of the more distinctive all-inclusives in the region. Iberostar Selection Paraíso Maya (from approximately MXN $4,500/night, all-inclusive) is a large family-oriented property with a strong beach and kids’ club. Banyan Tree Mayakoba (from approximately MXN $9,000/night) is at the top end of the Playacar/Riviera Maya corridor.
Booking advice
- Central 5th Avenue hotels sell out quickly for Christmas and New Year — book two to three months ahead for this period
- Rooms facing 5th Avenue get noise from bars and pedestrian traffic late into the night — ask for a garden or pool-facing room when booking if you’re a light sleeper
- April sargassum seaweed is a recurring issue along parts of the Playa del Carmen beach. Hotels in Playacar tend to have better beach-clearing infrastructure. Check recent traveller photos before booking based on beach quality
- The Cozumel ferry terminal is at Calle 1 Sur — accommodation near Calle 1–12 makes early morning ferry departures easier
Practical notes
- Playa del Carmen airport handles a small number of regional flights; most travellers arrive via Cancún International (CUN), 65 km north
- Colectivos to Tulum (approximately MXN $50, 45 minutes) and Cancún (approximately MXN $50, 60 minutes) run from Avenida 20 near the bus terminal
- The ferry to Cozumel runs approximately every hour from 6 am to midnight (approximately MXN $280 each way as of 2026); book in advance during peak season
- Uber operates in Playa del Carmen; taxis from the official sitios are reliable but often negotiate fares — agree a price before getting in
