Best Beaches on Mexico's Pacific Coast
Mexico's Pacific coast beaches: Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Sayulita, Puerto Escondido, and Mazatlán — swimming, surfing, and solitude.
Beaches
Mexico has two distinct coastlines — the Caribbean and the Pacific — with completely different characters. The Caribbean coast (Riviera Maya) offers turquoise shallow water over white sand, world-class diving on the Great Mayan Reef, and cenote swimming accessible from Tulum and Playa del Carmen. The Pacific coast is wider-ranging: from the resort concentration of Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta in the north to the surf villages of Puerto Escondido and Huatulco in the south.
The two coasts suit different travellers. The Caribbean appeals to those after organised resorts, reliable snorkelling, and easy access to Mayan ruins. The Pacific — particularly the Oaxacan coast — is better for surfing, budget travel, and a more independent experience. We have detailed guides to each coast and the key beach destinations within them.
Cancún to Tulum — turquoise water, white sand, cenotes, and the Great Mayan Reef. The most developed and most visited stretch of Mexican coastline. Best for: snorkelling, diving, cenote swimming, Mayan ruin day trips.
Baja California and Jalisco — dramatic desert landscapes meeting the Pacific, with world-class sport fishing, whale watching in winter, and a more secluded feel than the Caribbean. Best for: whale watching (Dec–Apr), surf, luxury resorts.
Oaxacan and Guerrero coasts — wilder, less developed, with strong surf beaches and a backpacker-friendly infrastructure. Best for: surfing, budget travel, off-season quiet.
