Accommodation
Hotels in Mexico: Where to Stay in Every City
Mexico has an accommodation range that few countries can match. At the high end sit restored colonial haciendas in Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende, overwater palapa bungalows in Bacalar, and five-star beach resorts in Los Cabos and Cancún. At the budget end, Mexico City and Guadalajara have some of Latin America's best hostels.
Value for money varies sharply by destination. Resort areas (Cancún's Hotel Zone, Los Cabos) price at international rates. Colonial cities (Oaxaca, Mérida, Guanajuato) offer exceptional boutique hotels at a fraction of equivalent European prices. Budget travellers will find Mexico City and Oaxaca particularly good value for the quality on offer.

Hostels by City
Mexico has a strong hostel network in its main cities. Dorm beds typically run MXN 200–400 ($10–20) per night. Detailed hostel guides for every city with a meaningful budget scene.
Types of Accommodation
Colonial Boutique Hotels
Converted colonial mansions and haciendas are one of Mexico's great accommodation experiences. Particularly strong in Oaxaca, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, and Mérida. Many have 10–20 rooms arranged around a central courtyard, rooftop terraces, and a level of character that international chains cannot replicate.
Beach Resorts
Mexico's resort infrastructure is among the best in the Americas. The Caribbean coast (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum) and Pacific coast (Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Huatulco) both have extensive all-inclusive and boutique beach resort options. Quality ranges from international five-star down to mid-range beachfront bungalows.
Budget Hostels
Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Cristóbal de las Casas, and Guadalajara all have strong hostel networks. Dorm beds in the main cities typically run MXN 200–400 ($10–20) per night. Many include breakfast, social events, and walking tour connections.
Eco-Lodges & Cenote Camps
The Yucatán Peninsula has a growing network of eco-lodges and jungle camps, especially around Tulum and Bacalar. Many are designed around cenote access, hammock bungalows, and low-impact infrastructure. A distinctive accommodation type not available elsewhere in the world.
