Where to Stay on Isla Mujeres

Playa Norte beach on Isla Mujeres with turquoise Caribbean water and white sand

Isla Mujeres is a small island — 8 km long and under 1 km wide. Most accommodation is concentrated at the northern tip (near Playa Norte) or in the town centre. The entire island is walkable or navigable by golf cart (the standard island transport).

Where to stay

North end (Playa Norte area)

The most desirable location — walking distance to the best beach, the town centre, and the ferry dock. Hotels here range from budget guesthouses to mid-range boutique properties.

Best for: first-time visitors, beach focus, access to everything on foot.

Price range: MXN 700–2,500/night depending on season and amenities. December–April is peak season with highest prices.

Town centre (Colonia Centro)

The grid of streets between the ferry dock and Playa Norte. More affordable than beachfront; 5 minutes walk to the beach. Has the highest concentration of restaurants, cafes, and tour operator offices.

Best for: budget and mid-range travellers who want to be in the middle of things.

Price range: MXN 450–1,500/night.

South end (Garrafón area)

The southern tip is quieter — mostly day-trippers visiting Parque Garrafón. A handful of small guesthouses operate here. Not recommended for most stays unless you specifically want seclusion.

Golf cart rentals

Golf carts are the primary way to get around and cost MXN 350–600/day. Renting one for at least one day to circuit the entire island is recommended — the road goes all the way to the southern lighthouse and back. Several rental shops near the ferry dock.

Booking ahead

December–March: book at least 4–6 weeks ahead. The island is small and rooms sell out, particularly at the lower and mid-range price points.

July–August: Mexican domestic high season — book in advance for this period too, though international visitor numbers are lower.

May–June and September–November: shoulder season and cheapest. September and October carry hurricane risk; some accommodation closes.

Getting to the island

Ferries depart from Puerto Juárez in Cancún (25 minutes, frequent service) and from Playa del Carmen (less common). Puerto Juárez is the main route; several ferry companies operate it.
