Where to Stay on Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is a small island — 7 km long and under 1 km wide. Most accommodation is concentrated at the northern tip (near Playa Norte) or in the town centre grid between the ferry dock and the beach. The entire island is walkable or navigable by golf cart. Staying overnight is strongly recommended — the day-trip crowds leave on the last afternoon ferries and the island transforms into a quiet village with excellent sunset views and seafood restaurants.

North end (Playa Norte area)
The most desirable location — walking distance to the best beach, the town centre, and the ferry dock. Hotels here range from budget guesthouses to beachfront boutique properties. The trade-off is price: the closer to Playa Norte, the higher the rate, especially in peak season (December–April).
Named properties:
| Hotel | Type | Approx. Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poc Na Hostel | Budget | Dorms from ~MXN $350/night | Beachfront, one of Mexico’s best-located hostels |
| Hotel Na Balam | Boutique | From ~MXN $2,500/night | On Playa Norte, yoga studio, garden |
| Ixchel Beach Hotel | Mid-range | From ~MXN $1,500/night | Pool, beach access, family-friendly |
| Hotel Secreto | Boutique | From ~MXN $3,500/night | Adults-only, sea-view rooms, intimate |
| Privilege Aluxes | Resort | From ~MXN $3,000/night | Pool, spa, beachfront |
Poc Na Hostel deserves special mention — it is directly on Playa Norte with dorm beds from approximately MXN $350/night. For the location, this is remarkable value. The hostel has a social atmosphere, a beach bar, and hammocks on the sand.
Hotel Secreto is the most refined option on the island — a small adults-only property with 12 rooms, each with sea views. The minimalist design and quiet atmosphere make it a contrast to the island’s more casual vibe.
Town centre (Colonia Centro)
The grid of streets between the ferry dock and Playa Norte. More affordable than beachfront — most properties are 5–10 minutes’ walk to the beach. The town centre has the highest concentration of restaurants, cafés, and tour operator offices. Calle Hidalgo (the main pedestrian street) runs through the middle.
Named properties:
| Hotel | Type | Approx. Rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel Kinich | Budget-mid | From ~MXN $800/night | Central, clean, good value |
| Hotel Rocamar | Mid-range | From ~MXN $1,200/night | Waterfront, pool, east side |
| Casa El Pio | Boutique | From ~MXN $2,000/night | Restored house, rooftop |
| Hotel Francis Arlene | Budget | From ~MXN $600/night | Family-run, central |
Best for: Budget and mid-range travellers who want to be in the middle of things. The evening atmosphere on Hidalgo street — restaurants, live music, art vendors — is part of the island experience.
South end (Garrafón area)
The southern half of the island is quieter — mostly day-trippers visiting Punta Sur and Garrafón Park. A handful of small guesthouses and rental properties operate here. Not recommended for most stays unless you specifically want seclusion and have rented a golf cart.
Golf cart rental
Golf carts are the primary way to get around the island. Rental costs approximately MXN $500–800/day for a full day, approximately MXN $350–500 for 4 hours. Rental shops are clustered near the ferry dock — compare prices at 2–3 shops before committing. Renting for at least one day to circuit the entire island (Playa Norte to Punta Sur and back, approximately 18 km) is recommended.
Some hotels include golf cart rental in their rate or offer discounted rates through partner operators.
Booking advice
December–March: Peak season. Book at least 4–6 weeks ahead, especially at the lower and mid-range price points. The island is small and rooms sell out — particularly Poc Na Hostel and the Playa Norte hotels.
July–August: Mexican domestic high season. Book in advance — international visitor numbers are lower but domestic tourism is strong.
Semana Santa (Easter week): The busiest period for Mexican domestic tourism. Everything books out. Reserve months ahead.
May–June and September–November: Shoulder season and cheapest rates. September and October carry hurricane risk; some accommodation closes or reduces services. This is also the best window for deals — rates drop 30–40% from peak.
Day trip vs overnight
The day-trip ferries bring a surge of visitors from Cancún between 10 am and 5 pm. By 6 pm, the island’s population drops sharply and the atmosphere changes completely. Playa Norte at sunset with only overnight guests is a different experience from the midday crowd.
Overnight stays also allow:
- Early morning at Playa Norte (empty, best water clarity)
- Sunset and evening on Hidalgo street (restaurants, cocktails, live music)
- Sunrise whale shark tours (June–September, departing at 6 am)
- The ferry dock area without the midday queues
For a first visit, one night is enough to experience the difference. Two nights allows a more relaxed pace with time for a snorkel tour and the full golf cart circuit.
Getting to the island
Puerto Juárez (northeast Cancún) — the main ferry terminal. Ferries every 30 minutes, 20-minute crossing, approximately MXN $180–220 each way. Puerto Juárez is reachable by Ruta 1 bus from the Cancún Hotel Zone or by Uber/taxi (approximately MXN $100–200 from the Hotel Zone).
Gran Puerto Cancún (Hotel Zone) — Ultramar operates a faster, pricier service (approximately MXN $350 each way, 15 minutes). More convenient if coming from the Hotel Zone.
The ferry dock on Isla Mujeres is in the town centre — most accommodation is within walking distance.
