Isla Mujeres is a 7 km × 700 m island 13 km off the coast of Cancún. It is accessible by ferry in 20 minutes and is one of the most popular day trips from the Hotel Zone — but it is genuinely worth staying overnight, when the daytime crowds leave and the island quietens significantly.

Playa Norte
The island’s main beach and one of the best in the Caribbean. The water is exceptionally shallow and calm — waist-deep for 100+ metres out — protected from the open sea by the island’s orientation. The sand is fine white powder and the colour is the vivid turquoise that the Caribbean coast is known for.
Beach clubs along the shore offer sunlounger and umbrella hire (approximately MXN $200–300/day, often with a food/drink minimum). Zama Beach Club and Buho’s are popular choices — Buho’s has a swing bar directly over the water. Public access is free and there is space to spread out between the club areas.
Arrive before 10 am for the best spots. By noon, the day-trip boats from Cancún have arrived and the beach fills up. Sunsets face toward Cancún across the water and are reliably good.
Golf cart circuit
The standard way to explore the island independently. Golf carts rent from shops near the ferry dock: approximately USD $45–60 for 4 hours, approximately USD $65–90 for a full day. Rates vary by operator — compare a few before committing.
The circuit route:
- Town centre — browse Calle Hidalgo (the main pedestrian street), cafés and shops
- South along the western coast — pass the turtle farm and beach areas
- Punta Sur — sea cliffs, lighthouse, ruined Ixchel temple, sculpture garden
- East coast — rougher Caribbean-facing coast, rocky shoreline
- North — back to Playa Norte
The full circuit is approximately 18 km and takes 2–3 hours at a leisurely pace with stops. The road is hilly at the southern end but manageable in a golf cart.
Snorkelling and MUSA
The eastern coast of the island has good natural reef for snorkelling. Most snorkel tours also include MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) — an underwater sculpture park where over 500 cement statues by artists including Jason deCaires Taylor have become artificial reef habitat. The sculptures are at 3–6 m depth and are covered in coral and algae growth, creating an eerie underwater gallery. Snorkel tours from the pier in town cost approximately USD $35–50 including gear and transport, visiting 2–3 sites over 2–3 hours.
For divers, MUSA has deeper galleries at 8–10 m (approximately USD $70–90 for a 2-tank dive from Isla Mujeres operators). The deeper sculptures are less visited and have more marine growth.
Manchones Reef — the natural reef south of the island — is another strong snorkel site with schools of tropical fish, sea fans, and occasional nurse sharks and rays.
Tortugranja turtle sanctuary
A sea turtle research and protection centre on the island’s eastern coast, approximately 5 km from town. Hawksbill, green, and loggerhead turtles nest on Isla Mujeres’s beaches from May to October. The centre houses hatchlings in various growth stages and injured adults in viewing tanks. Educational signage explains the conservation programme.
Entry approximately MXN $40. Open daily 9 am–5 pm. Allow 30–45 minutes. Combine with a golf cart circuit of the island. From August to October, the centre sometimes organises evening turtle release events where hatchlings are released into the sea.
Punta Sur
The southern tip of the island has dramatic limestone cliffs dropping into the Caribbean. At the clifftop:
- Sculpture garden — open-air art installation with sculptures and viewpoints overlooking the sea
- Ixchel temple ruins — the remains of the Maya shrine to Ixchel (goddess of fertility), from which the island gets its name (“Island of Women”)
- Lighthouse — views south toward the open Caribbean
Entry approximately MXN $30. The cliffs are the highest point on the island and the views are excellent in clear weather.
Whale shark season (June–September)
The same whale shark aggregation accessible from Holbox can be reached by boat from Isla Mujeres. Tours depart at sunrise (approximately 6–7 am) for the feeding grounds between Isla Contoy and the island. Two swimmers enter the water at a time with a guide and swim alongside the sharks (7–12 m long, harmless filter feeders). Approximately USD $100–130 per person including boat, guide, gear, and breakfast.
Booking 1–2 days ahead is essential in July and August. Isla Mujeres operators are well-regarded for strict group-size limits and experienced guides. Keen Divers and Sea Hawk Divers are established operators.
Garrafón Natural Reef Park
A commercial snorkel and adventure park on the southern tip of the island. All-inclusive day passes from approximately USD $50–80 include snorkelling the reef, zip-lining over the cliffs, kayaking, and food/drinks. The reef sections are decent but the park is heavily managed and can feel commercial.
Independent snorkel tours from town offer better reef quality at lower prices — consider Garrafón mainly if you want the zip-line and cliff-top infinity pool experience.
Isla Contoy excursion
Isla Contoy is an uninhabited island 30 km north of Isla Mujeres — a protected national park and seabird nesting reserve. Day trips from Isla Mujeres (approximately USD $70–100, full day) include snorkelling the reef around the island, a beach stop, bird observation, and lunch. Only 200 visitors are permitted daily. The island has frigate birds, pelicans, cormorants, and sea turtles.
Getting there
Ferry from Puerto Juárez (Cancún) — the main route. Ferries every 30 minutes. Journey 20 minutes. Cost approximately MXN $180–220 each way. Puerto Juárez is reachable by Ruta 1 bus from the Hotel Zone (approximately MXN $12) or by Uber/taxi.
Ferry from Gran Puerto Cancún (Hotel Zone) — Ultramar operates a faster service (15–20 minutes) at approximately MXN $350 each way. More convenient if staying in the Hotel Zone.
Practical tips
- Day trip vs overnight: The island is a different place after the last day-trip ferries leave (around 5–6 pm). Staying overnight gives you Playa Norte to yourself at sunset and early morning.
- Sunscreen: Reef-safe sunscreen is strongly recommended — the reef around the island is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system.
- Cash: Some beach clubs and market stalls are cash-only. ATMs are available near the ferry dock.
- Ferry schedule: The last ferry typically departs around 11:30 pm but schedules can change — check current times, especially in low season.
