Bay of Banderas with city and mountains behind, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Puerto Vallarta curves around the Banderas Bay, and each neighbourhood along that curve has a different personality. The Romantic Zone is bohemian and walkable; El Centro has the colonial Malecón and the main church; the Hotel Zone offers large resorts on a long beach. Marina Vallarta is corporate and quiet. Which one suits you depends on what you want from the trip.

Romantic Zone (Zona Romántica)

Best for: couples, foodies, LGBTQ+ travellers, independent explorers

The Romantic Zone sits south of the Cuale River. It’s the most characterful neighbourhood in Puerto Vallarta — narrow cobblestone streets, small restaurants packed together along Basilio Badillo and Olas Altas, an excellent weekend market (Tianguis Cultural del Pueblo), and the beach at Los Muertos, which has a pier, beach clubs, and a good mix of people. The LGBTQ+ scene concentrates here; the area is very welcoming regardless of who you are.

Budget: Hostel Vallarta (from approximately MXN $300/night for dorms, MXN $800/night for privates) is well-located near the Olas Altas restaurant strip. Posada Roger (from approximately MXN $700/night) is a long-running budget guesthouse with a central location and decent rooms.

Mid-range: Hacienda San Angel (from approximately MXN $3,500/night) occupies a hillside property with Pacific views, daily breakfast, and access to a private beach club. Hotel Mercurio (from approximately MXN $1,800/night) is a popular adults-only, gay-friendly property near Los Muertos beach. Casa Cupula (from approximately MXN $2,500/night) is another adults-only boutique, LGBTQ+-owned, with a hillside pool.

Luxury: Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa (from approximately MXN $7,000/night) is at the southern edge of the Romantic Zone — stunning clifftop villas with private plunge pools, one of PV’s most striking properties.

El Centro

Best for: history, the Malecón, families, those who want a central base

El Centro is the historic heart of Puerto Vallarta — the parish church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe with its distinctive crown tower, the Malecón boardwalk along the bay, and a mix of tourist restaurants and local taquerías. Hotels here range from budget to boutique; getting to the Romantic Zone or the Hotel Zone both require a taxi or bus (10–20 minutes each direction).

Budget: Hotel Posada de Roger (from approximately MXN $600/night) is basic but clean, close to the Malecón. Hotel Los Cuatro Vientos (from approximately MXN $850/night) is a small hilltop property with a bar and city views.

Mid-range: Hotel Eloisa (from approximately MXN $1,500/night) has a central location near the main church and a rooftop pool. Bougainvillea Puerto Vallarta (from approximately MXN $1,800/night) is a newer boutique property with good design and a downtown location.

Luxury: Casa Kimberly (from approximately MXN $5,500/night) was once Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s private residence — now a boutique hotel with a heart-shaped pool and extraordinary views. One of Mexico’s more storied luxury stays.

Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera)

Best for: families, those who want a resort beach holiday, larger pools and water parks

The Hotel Zone runs north from El Centro, with large resort hotels lining a long Pacific beach. The beach here is wider and calmer than Los Muertos in the Romantic Zone. The neighbourhood is not walkable to old-town restaurants — taxis or the local bus are necessary.

Mid-range: Sunscape Puerto Vallarta Resort (from approximately MXN $2,500/night, all-inclusive) is a reliable family all-inclusive with a large pool complex and direct beach access. Krystal Vallarta (from approximately MXN $2,800/night) is a longstanding Hotel Zone resort with multiple pools and a good beachfront location.

Luxury: Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit (from approximately MXN $9,500/night, all-inclusive, technically in Nuevo Vallarta just north) is one of Mexico’s top-rated all-inclusive properties, with outstanding dining included. Grand Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta (from approximately MXN $4,500/night) has reliable luxury and a good beach club.

Marina Vallarta

Best for: yacht owners, golfers, business travellers, those wanting quiet modern accommodation

Marina Vallarta is north of the Hotel Zone — a planned marina development with a golf course, mall, and a mix of condos and hotels. It feels more corporate than the rest of Puerto Vallarta but has modern, well-maintained accommodation and easy access to the airport (10 minutes).

Mid-range to luxury: Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa (from approximately MXN $3,500/night) is the dominant property here — reliable service, good beach access, and a strong pool area. Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel (from approximately MXN $6,500/night, adults-only all-inclusive) has one of the better spa programmes in the city.

Booking advice

  • High season (Dec–Apr) is when Puerto Vallarta is at its best but most expensive. Book boutique Romantic Zone properties four to six weeks ahead
  • The Whale Festival (January–March humpback season) and New Year bring the biggest price spikes — expect 40–60% above low-season rates
  • Low season (May–Oct) prices drop significantly and the city is notably quieter. Mornings are usually sunny; expect afternoon showers
  • Airport location: Puerto Vallarta’s international airport (PVR) is in Marina Vallarta — Hotel Zone and Marina hotels are 10 minutes away; the Romantic Zone is 20–25 minutes

Practical notes

  • Puerto Vallarta is at sea level — no altitude adjustment needed
  • Local buses (approximately MXN $12) run the length of the Hotel Zone into El Centro. Uber is available and reliable
  • The Cuale River divides El Centro from the Romantic Zone — easily crossed on foot via the small bridges
  • Sayulita (45 km north) and Punta de Mita (50 km north) are popular day trips from Puerto Vallarta; base in PV and do them as excursions
