Festival Internacional Cervantino 2026

The Festival Internacional Cervantino (FIC) is Latin America’s largest international arts festival, held annually in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Guanajuato. Running from 8 to 25 October 2026, it brings together orchestras, theatre companies, dance troupes, and visual artists from dozens of countries across 18 days of performances. The festival draws roughly 100,000 visitors to a city of 170,000 people — securing accommodation early is essential.

Origins and Scale

The festival traces its roots to 1953, when a local theatre professor named Enrique Ruelas Espinoza began staging short plays based on the entremeses (comic interludes) of Miguel de Cervantes in Guanajuato’s alleyways. What began as a university student production grew into an international festival formally launched in 1972. Today it stages more than 700 events — theatre, classical and contemporary music, opera, dance, film, and visual arts — spread across indoor venues and the city’s famous callejones (narrow alleyways).

What to Expect

Performances range from free street events to ticketed headline shows at the Teatro Juárez and the Teatro Principal, two of Guanajuato’s most striking nineteenth-century venues. The festival typically announces a guest country or region each year, programming an extended focus on that culture’s artistic tradition alongside the wider international lineup.

Street performances and outdoor concerts are scheduled throughout the historic centre, particularly around Plaza de la Paz and Plaza San Roque. These are free to attend and give the city a festive, spontaneous atmosphere even for visitors without tickets.

Getting Tickets

Tickets for the headline performances go on sale through the official festival website (festivalcervantino.gob.mx) several months before the event. Popular shows — particularly classical music concerts and internationally touring theatre productions — sell out quickly. We recommend checking the programme as soon as it is announced and booking in the first wave of ticket releases.

Getting to Guanajuato

Guanajuato does not have a commercial airport. The closest is Del Bajío International Airport (BJX) in Silao, approximately 30 km away. Taxis and private transfers from BJX to the city centre take around 35 to 45 minutes and cost approximately MXN 350-500 as of 2026. Direct bus services from Mexico City, Guadalajara, and San Miguel de Allende run frequently; the journey from Mexico City takes around four to five hours.

Practical Tips

Book accommodation in Guanajuato at least two to three months ahead for the festival period. Many visitors stay in nearby León or San Miguel de Allende and commute in, which can reduce accommodation pressure but adds travel time. The city’s streets are pedestrianised in parts and built on hillsides — comfortable walking shoes are important. Evening performances often run late, so plan return transport in advance if you are staying outside the city.
