Hurricane Polo has rapidly intensified and is now tracking directly toward Baja California Sur and the coast of Sonora. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City issued a formal weather alert on 26 September, naming both states as being in the storm’s direct path. If you have travel booked to Los Cabos, La Paz, or coastal Sonora in the next 72 hours, here is what you need to act on now.
U.S. Embassy Alert
The Embassy’s alert advises all U.S. citizens currently in Baja California Sur and Sonora to follow instructions from Mexican civil protection authorities, monitor local emergency broadcasts, and keep away from coastal areas and flood-prone zones. Registration through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is strongly recommended for anyone currently in the region.
Current Storm Track
As of 26 September, Polo is tracking northwest-to-north along Mexico’s Pacific seaboard. Landfall is forecast somewhere between Cabo San Lucas and Guaymas in Sonora, with the window running from the evening of 26 September through 28 September. Sustained winds above 200 km/h and significant storm surge are forecast for the landfall zone.
Flight Cancellations
Airlines serving Los Cabos International (SJD) and airports along the Sonoran coast have begun cancelling and rerouting flights. Aeromexico, Volaris, and US carriers operating into SJD are issuing fare waivers. Contact your airline directly — do not wait for an automated notification, and check your booking status before heading to any affected airport.
If Your Travel Is Coming Up
Travellers not yet in the region should postpone non-essential trips to Los Cabos, La Paz, Todos Santos, and coastal Sonora until Mexican authorities issue an all-clear. If your departure falls within the next four days, contact your airline now to understand your rebooking options before waivers expire.
