Mérida Airport Transfer Guide — MID to the Historic Centre

Mérida International Airport (IATA: MID) is a compact, well-run airport serving the capital of Yucatán state. It handles direct flights from Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, and several US cities including Houston, Miami, and Dallas-Fort Worth. The airport has a single terminal building — arrivals and departures share the same structure, making orientation simple.

Mérida city centre is 8 km from the terminal. Traffic is light by Mexican standards outside of rush hours, so most journeys take 15–25 minutes.

Authorised Airport Taxis

The safest, most straightforward option. Inside MID arrivals, the TAXIT and SITEUR booths sell fixed-rate vouchers by destination zone before you exit the building. Paying at the booth locks in the price — no negotiating with the driver required.

Approximate fares from MID as of 2026:

DestinationApproximate Fare
Centro Histórico (Plaza Grande)MXN $250–350
Paseo de Montejo hotelsMXN $280–380
Altabrisa / Gran Plaza areaMXN $200–280
Mérida Norte hotel corridorMXN $220–300

Journey time to the city centre is typically 15–25 minutes in normal traffic; up to 40 minutes during the morning rush hour (7–9 am) or on Sundays when road closures for cycling events affect central routes.

Important: Do not accept rides from men approaching you in the arrivals hall before you reach the official booth. The fixed-rate system exists specifically to prevent price gouging. Walk past all approaches and head directly to the voucher counter.

Uber and InDriver (Rideshare)

Both Uber and InDriver operate across Mérida and are available at the airport. Pickup is from the departures level drop-off area or a designated spot outside the main terminal exit — look for signage.

Approximate rideshare fares to the city centre as of 2026:

  • Centro Histórico: MXN $130–200
  • Paseo de Montejo: MXN $150–220

InDriver allows passengers to propose a fare and drivers to accept or counter, which can result in slightly lower prices than Uber for longer journeys. Both apps work reliably in Mérida.

Note on driver availability: Rideshare availability at MID is lower than at larger airports. During late-night arrivals (after 11 pm) or early morning arrivals (before 6 am), wait times can be 15–25 minutes. In those cases, the authorised taxi booth is the more reliable option.

Private Transfer

Pre-booked private transfers offer the most seamless experience, particularly for groups, families with car seats, or travellers arriving late at night. The driver meets you in arrivals by name.

Approximate private transfer fares (per vehicle, as of 2026):

  • Airport to Centro Histórico: MXN $350–500
  • Airport to Paseo de Montejo: MXN $400–550
  • Airport to Progreso (coastal resort town): MXN $700–900

Book via airport transfers or GetTransfer to compare providers and lock in the price in advance. Particularly useful if you have a tight connection or an early-morning domestic flight the next day.

Colectivo and City Bus

There are no colectivo vans operating a fixed route directly from the terminal. The closest city bus stops are approximately 500 m from the main terminal exit along the access road — manageable with a single backpack but impractical with suitcases. City buses to the centre run for approximately MXN $15 but journeys involve multiple stops and take 40–60 minutes.

For budget travellers arriving during daylight hours with light luggage, the bus is viable. For everyone else, a taxi or rideshare is the practical choice.

Scam Awareness at MID

Mérida airport is generally lower-risk than the main hubs, but a few patterns are worth knowing:

  • Unofficial taxi touts: Men in plain clothes approach arriving passengers in the arrivals hall and offer “official” or “cheaper” taxis before you reach the booth. These are not regulated. Always purchase your voucher at the fixed-rate counter first.
  • Inflated rideshare fees: Some drivers cancel confirmed Uber rides in the app and then offer the same journey “off the app” at a higher rate. Cancel the trip in the app and request a new driver instead.
  • Hotel “information desks”: Small booths in arrivals may appear official but are operated by specific hotels or tour companies. They are not tourist information offices and will steer you towards affiliated accommodation.

Getting to the Yucatán Peninsula

MID is well-positioned for onward travel around the Yucatán Peninsula. From Mérida city centre:

Practical Tips

  • Currency: There is an ATM inside MID arrivals (BBVA, Santander). Withdraw MXN before you leave the terminal if you plan to pay the taxi voucher in cash.
  • SIM card: Telcel and AT&T kiosks operate inside or just outside the terminal. A prepaid SIM with data costs approximately MXN $100–150 and is useful for rideshare apps.
  • Car rental: All major agencies (Hertz, Budget, Alamo, Enterprise) have desks inside arrivals. The road from MID to the city centre is simple to navigate — one route in via Avenida Itzáes.
  • Return journey: When heading back to MID, allow at least 90 minutes before departure. Traffic on Sunday mornings can be unusually slow due to Bici-Ruta road closures on the Paseo de Montejo.
