Cancun International Airport (CUN) is one of Mexico’s busiest airports, serving millions of travellers annually from North America, Europe, and Latin America. The airport has four terminals — Terminals 2, 3, and 4 handle most international and domestic traffic; Terminal 1 is used for charter and some private flights.

Unlike Mexico City, Cancun airport does not have a city metro connection or public bus directly to the Hotel Zone. Your main options are ADO buses (to downtown and along the Riviera Maya), shared shuttles, or private transfers.

Terminals at Cancun Airport

TerminalAirlines
Terminal 2American, Delta, United, Air Canada, WestJet, AeroMexico, Copa
Terminal 3Southwest, Spirit, Frontier, Interjet, VivaAerobus, Volaris
Terminal 4Most European carriers: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, TUI, Condor, Iberia, KLM, Lufthansa, Air France

All terminals are on the same airport campus, accessible via a short walking connection or free shuttle bus.

ADO Bus (Budget Option)

ADO is Mexico’s national coach network and operates direct service from Cancun airport to several destinations. Buses depart from the covered bus bays outside Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

Key routes and approximate fares (as of 2026):

RouteFareJourney Time
Cancun airport → Downtown Cancun bus station~MXN $10520–30 min
Cancun airport → Playa del Carmen~MXN $23060–75 min
Cancun airport → Tulum~MXN $3202 hours

From Downtown Cancun station (ADO terminal on Avenida Tulum), you can connect to the Hotel Zone by local bus (R-1, R-2 routes, approximately MXN $15) or taxi (approximately MXN $80–120).

Note on the Hotel Zone: ADO buses do not stop along the Hotel Zone strip. If your hotel is on the Kukulcan Boulevard, you need a connecting taxi or the R-27 local bus from downtown Cancun.

Shared Shuttle

Shared shuttles (collectivos) operate from counters inside arrivals at all terminals. You share a minivan with other passengers going to the same general zone. Multiple companies operate these — look for Cancun Transfers, Lomas Travel, or independent transfer desks inside the terminal.

Approximate shared shuttle fares (per person, as of 2026):

  • Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera): MXN $200–350 per person
  • Cancun downtown: MXN $150–200 per person
  • Playa del Carmen: MXN $350–500 per person
  • Tulum: MXN $600–800 per person

Shared shuttles make multiple stops, so journeys can take significantly longer than the straight-line distance implies. A shared shuttle to a hotel at the northern end of the Hotel Zone may stop at 3–5 other hotels first.

Private Transfer

The fastest and most comfortable option, particularly for groups of 3 or more where the per-person cost becomes competitive. Multiple companies operate from official counters inside arrivals.

Approximate private transfer fares (per vehicle, as of 2026):

  • Hotel Zone (any hotel on Kukulcan): MXN $500–700
  • Playa del Carmen centro: MXN $700–950
  • Playa del Carmen hotel zone: MXN $800–1,100
  • Tulum pueblo / hotel zone: MXN $1,200–1,600
  • Akumal / Chemuyil: MXN $900–1,200
  • Holbox (via Chiquilá): MXN $1,800–2,400

Book at the official transfer desk inside arrivals or pre-book online — prices at the official counters are regulated. Private drivers approaching you outside the exit offer unofficial transfers at seemingly lower prices; these are not regulated and have no quality guarantee.

Cancun Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera)

The Kukulcan Boulevard hotel strip runs for approximately 22 km along a narrow strip of land between the Caribbean and Laguna Nichupté. Hotels cluster into northern (km 1–9), middle (km 9–15), and southern sections (km 15–25). Your transfer fare and time depend on which hotel zone km marker your property is located — check this before booking ground transport.

Practical Tips

  • Sim card on arrival: Buy a local SIM or eSIM at the airport (Telcel, AT&T, Movistar kiosks in arrivals). Essential for using ride-share apps and maps.
  • Cash vs. card: Most transfers accept card but it is worth having MXN $500–1,000 in local currency for incidentals (tips, snacks, local buses).
  • Peak season queueing: Christmas, Easter, and July–August see long queues at transfer desks. Pre-booking saves 30–45 minutes.
  • Return transfer: Ask your hotel concierge or book directly with the same transfer company. Hotel Zone to airport typically costs 15–20% less than the airport-to-hotel direction.
  • Flight delays: Notify your transfer company immediately if your flight is delayed — most reputable companies track flights but direct notification helps.
