Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido

Zicatela beach in Puerto Escondido with powerful Pacific surf and palm trees

Puerto Escondido is stretched along a series of beaches connected by cliffs and headlands. Each zone has a different character; picking the right area matters more here than in most Mexican beach destinations.

Zicatela (surf beach)

The main strip — a long black-sand beach with world-class surf (the Mexican Pipeline). Backpacker hostels, mid-range hotels, surf schools, and the highest concentration of restaurants and bars. Loud at night; not suitable for swimming (dangerous rip currents and powerful shore break).

Best for: surfers, backpackers, travellers who want nightlife and the social scene.

Price range: dormitories MXN 200–350; private rooms MXN 500–1,200.

La Punta (Boca de Bacocho)

The southern end of Zicatela, where the beach curves around a small point. Calmer than mid-Zicatela; more bohemian and relaxed. Yoga studios, vegetarian cafes, and smaller guesthouses have concentrated here. The swimming conditions are slightly better at the point than the main Zicatela break.

Best for: longer-stay visitors, yoga/wellness travellers, a quieter version of the Zicatela vibe.

Price range: MXN 600–1,800.

Rinconada

The town centre, on a small bay behind the fishing beach. The cheapest accommodation, basic services, the market, and the main bus station are here. Not a beach you’d swim from, but central and practical.

Best for: budget travellers, those prioritising cost over beach access.

Price range: MXN 350–700.

Playa Principal and Marinero

The two small bays below the town are swimmable — protected enough for calmer conditions, unlike Zicatela. A handful of hotels and restaurants directly on these beaches. Better for families or those wanting to swim without a long walk.

Bacocho

North of the town, a quieter beach with a few upscale hotels. Less backpacker infrastructure; more peaceful. 20–30 minutes walk or a short taxi from the main action.

Best for: those wanting to avoid the Zicatela party scene while still being close to Puerto Escondido.

Price range: MXN 1,200–3,500 at boutique properties.

When to book

Peak season December–March. Surfing competition season (November) brings more visitors to Zicatela specifically. Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead in high season.
