Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is stretched along a series of beaches connected by cliffs and headlands. Each zone has a different character; picking the right area matters more here than in most Mexican beach destinations.

Zicatela (surf beach)
The main strip — a long black-sand beach with world-class surf (the Mexican Pipeline). The highest concentration of hostels, mid-range hotels, surf schools, restaurants, and bars in Puerto Escondido. The Zicatela strip runs parallel to the beach for approximately 2 km.
Named properties: Hostel Central (dorms from approximately MXN $200/night, social, rooftop, surf board storage). Hotel Ines (budget, from approximately MXN $400/night, simple, beachfront). Hotel Rockaway (mid-range, from approximately MXN $1,200/night, surf-focused, pool). Baxar (boutique, from approximately MXN $1,500/night, design hotel, pool, rooftop bar).
Best for: Surfers, backpackers, travellers who want nightlife and the social scene. The restaurants along the beach have front-row views of the surf — breakfasting while watching overhead barrels is the Zicatela experience.
Note: The beach is not suitable for swimming (dangerous rip currents and powerful shore break). Swimming beaches are Carrizalillo (10 minutes by taxi) or Marinero (walking distance).
La Punta (bohemian end)
The southern end of Zicatela, where the beach curves around a point. Calmer than mid-Zicatela — more bohemian and relaxed. Yoga studios, vegetarian cafés, juice bars, and smaller guesthouses have concentrated here. The surf at La Punta is a softer right-hander — accessible to intermediate surfers.
Named properties: Casa Losodeli (boutique, from approximately MXN $2,000/night, yoga programme, restaurant, pool). Hotel Puerto Escondido (mid-range, from approximately MXN $1,200/night, La Punta location, quiet). Numerous guesthouses (from approximately MXN $400–800/night) line the streets behind the point.
Best for: Longer-stay visitors, yoga and wellness travellers, digital nomads. The coworking and café scene is growing here.
Rinconada (town centre)
The commercial centre of Puerto Escondido, on a small bay behind the fishing beach (Playa Principal). The cheapest accommodation, the main market (Mercado Benito Juárez), bus station, and essential services. Not a beach you would swim from, but central and practical.
Best for: Budget travellers, those prioritising cost over beach access. The market has the cheapest eating in town.
Price range: Private rooms from approximately MXN $300–700/night. Basic but functional.
Playa Principal and Marinero
The two small bays below the town are swimmable — protected enough for calmer conditions, unlike Zicatela. A handful of hotels and restaurants directly on these beaches.
Named properties: Hotel Santa Fe (Marinero beach, from approximately MXN $1,500/night, pool, established, one of the original hotels). Hotel Flor de María (Marinero, from approximately MXN $900/night, garden setting).
Best for: Families or those wanting to swim from their doorstep without the walk to Carrizalillo.
Bacocho (north)
North of the town, a quieter beach with a few upscale hotels. Less backpacker infrastructure; more peaceful. 20–30 minutes’ walk or a short taxi (approximately MXN $50) from the main Zicatela action.
Named properties: Hotel Escondido (boutique, from approximately MXN $2,500/night, quiet, pool, removed from the party scene). Vivo Resorts (condo-style, from approximately MXN $2,500/night, pool, full kitchens, family-friendly).
Best for: Those wanting to avoid the Zicatela party scene while still being close to Puerto Escondido.
Carrizalillo area
A few smaller properties are positioned near the Carrizalillo beach stairs, giving easy access to the best swimming beach without staying on the Zicatela strip. Limited options but growing.
Best for: Swimmers and snorkellers who want a calm beach rather than the surf scene.
Booking advice
Peak season: December–March. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for the better properties.
Surf competition (November): Brings more visitors specifically to Zicatela. The strip fills up.
Whale shark / turtle season (Jul–Dec): The wildlife draws additional visitors but accommodation is generally available with 1 week’s notice.
Budget tips: Zicatela hostels and Rinconada guesthouses are the cheapest. Monthly rates drop significantly for longer stays — many digital nomads negotiate monthly deals at La Punta properties (from approximately MXN $8,000–15,000/month for a room or studio).
