Puerto Escondido Travel Guide
Puerto Escondido guide: the Mexican Pipeline surf break, Zicatela beach, bioluminescent lagoon, sea turtles, and Oaxacan Pacific coast life.
Guides for Puerto Escondido
Puerto Escondido is a surf town on the Oaxacan Pacific coast. The surf break at Zicatela — known as the Mexican Pipeline — is one of the most powerful beach breaks in the world; the main season (May–October) brings large barrels and international surf competitions. But Puerto Escondido is more than a surf destination: it has a bioluminescent lagoon, sea turtle nesting beaches, a dolphin-rich bay, and some of the best fish tacos in Oaxaca.

The beaches
Zicatela — the main surf beach. A long black-sand stretch exposed to open Pacific swell. The break is a fast, powerful shorebreak that produces hollow barrels rivalling Pipeline in Hawaii. Not suitable for swimming — dangerous rip currents and heavy shore break at any swell size. The restaurants and bars lining the beach have front-row views of the surf.
Playa Carrizalillo — a small, sheltered cove 1.5 km from the centre, accessed by a staircase of 166 steps. Calm, protected water — the best swimming beach in Puerto Escondido. Palapas for hire, a few beachfront restaurants, and decent snorkelling on the rocky edges. Arrive by 8 am for a good spot — it gets crowded by mid-morning.
Playa Principal and El Adoquín — the town beach and the pedestrianised main street above it. Beach bars, fish restaurants, and the evening social scene. Swimming is possible but the water is less clear than Carrizalillo.
Playa Marinero — a small bay below the town with a left and right break, more sheltered than Zicatela. Good for intermediate surfers progressing from beginner breaks.
Punta Zicatela (La Punta) — the southern end of the Zicatela beach, where the sand curves around a point. A softer, more forgiving right-hander. The area has become the bohemian end of town — yoga studios, vegetarian cafés, and boutique guesthouses.
Bioluminescence (Laguna de Manialtepec)
The bioluminescent lagoon is 16 km west of Puerto Escondido. On moonless nights, dinoflagellates in the water bioluminesce when disturbed — kayaking or swimming through the lagoon produces glowing blue-green trails. Tours run from Puerto Escondido (approximately USD $25–35 per person, 2–3 hours including transport). The effect is strongest September–November and requires dark conditions — check moon phases before booking.
The lagoon is also good for daytime kayaking — mangroves, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, kingfishers, and herons.
Sea turtles
Several beaches near Puerto Escondido — particularly La Escobilla (1 hour east) — are Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting sites. Mass nestings (arribadas, when thousands of turtles come ashore simultaneously) occur between July and December. Turtle release programmes allow visitors to watch hatchlings head to the sea — an extraordinary experience available through local conservation groups (free or approximately MXN $100 donation).
