Puerto Escondido is a surf town on the Oaxacan Pacific coast — 8 hours from Oaxaca City by bus (shorter by small plane). It built its reputation on Playa Zicatela, which hosts one of the most powerful beach breaks in the world. The town itself splits between the tourist-facing strip and a more local community, with a strong surf and yoga culture and very little resort infrastructure.

Surfing Zicatela
The Mexican Pipeline at Zicatela is not for beginners — heavy shore break on a sand bottom, hollow barrels, and waves that regularly reach 3–5 m in peak season (May–October, when southern hemisphere and Pacific storm swells arrive). The wave is fast, powerful, and genuinely dangerous. Several surfers die here each year.
Watching from shore is spectacular regardless of ability level. The restaurants along Zicatela beach (Café del Mar, Lychee, Espadin) have front-row views of the surf — a morning coffee watching overhead barrels is one of the best free experiences in Pacific Mexico.
For learners: Playa Carrizalillo (sheltered cove, 1.5 km from centre) is the appropriate spot. Several surf schools operate here with 2-hour lessons from approximately USD $35–45 including board. Oasis Surf School and Puerto Surf are established operators. Playa Marinero (next to the town beach) has smaller waves — good for progressing beyond beginner level.
La Punta — the southern end of Zicatela — has a softer right-hander suitable for intermediate surfers. Board rental along Zicatela approximately MXN $150–200/hour.
Playa Carrizalillo
A small cove reached by a staircase of 166 steps down a cliff. Calm, protected water — the best swimming beach in Puerto Escondido. The water is clearer than the main beaches, and snorkelling on the rocky edges reveals tropical fish and sea urchins.
Palapas for hire (approximately MXN $100–150, sometimes with food/drink minimum). A few beachfront restaurants serve drinks and simple food. The beach is small and gets crowded by mid-morning — arrive by 8 am for a good spot. The climb back up the stairs is a workout.
Bioluminescence at Manialtepec Lagoon
Laguna de Manialtepec is 16 km west of Puerto Escondido. On moonless nights, dinoflagellates in the lagoon water bioluminesce when disturbed — kayaking or swimming produces glowing blue-green trails. The effect is strongest September–November and requires completely dark conditions.
Tours run from Puerto Escondido (approximately USD $25–35 per person, 2–3 hours including transport). Check moon phases before booking — anything brighter than a crescent moon significantly reduces the effect. Some operators include a swim in the bioluminescent water (extraordinary — waving your arms underwater produces a full-body glow).
The lagoon is also excellent for daytime kayaking — mangroves, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, kingfishers, and herons. Day tours approximately USD $20–30.
Dolphin watching
Spinner dolphins are common in the bay around Puerto Escondido. Boat tours depart from the small pier at Puerto Angelito — typically 2 hours, morning departures, approximately USD $20–30 per person. Pods of 50–100+ dolphins are regularly encountered. Sperm whales and humpback whales are occasionally spotted October–April.
Sea turtle releases (July–December)
Several beaches near Puerto Escondido — particularly La Escobilla (1 hour east) — are Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting sites. Mass nestings (arribadas) occur between July and December, when thousands of turtles come ashore simultaneously to lay eggs. Turtle release programmes allow visitors to help release hatchlings into the sea — an extraordinary experience.
Conservation groups organise evening releases at various beaches near town (free or approximately MXN $100 donation). Ask at tour desks or your accommodation for current schedules — timing depends on nesting activity.
The Adoquín and town centre
El Adoquín is the pedestrianised main street above Playa Principal — the social hub of Puerto Escondido. Restaurants, bars, tour offices, and craft vendors line the street. The atmosphere is lively in the evenings, especially during high season.
Mercado Benito Juárez (in the Rinconada neighbourhood) has budget food stalls — comida corrida, tacos, Oaxacan tlayudas. The cheapest eating in town (approximately MXN $40–70 per meal).
The fish market at Playa Principal sells the morning catch directly — tostada stalls nearby serve fresh ceviche and shrimp tostadas (approximately MXN $25–40 each).
La Punta neighbourhood
The southern end of Zicatela has become the bohemian quarter — yoga studios (Casa Losodeli, Yoga La Punta), vegetarian cafés, and boutique guesthouses. The vibe is more relaxed than central Zicatela. The swimming is slightly better at the point than the main Zicatela break, though still rough on bigger days. The sunsets from La Punta are excellent.
Practical tips
- Zicatela safety: Do not swim at Zicatela beach. The rip currents and shore break are dangerous even on “small” days. Drownings occur regularly.
- Sun: The Oaxacan coast is hot year-round. Carry water, wear sunscreen, and seek shade during midday.
- From Oaxaca City: Flights (30 minutes, propeller planes) or buses (7–8 hours on mountain roads). The flight is strongly recommended.
- Nightlife: Concentrated on the Adoquín and the Zicatela beach strip. Thursday and Saturday are the busiest nights.
