Mexicana de Aviación is returning to Guanajuato International Airport (BJX) on 27 July 2026, with a new six-day-a-week service connecting the Bajío region to Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) north of Mexico City.
The route is one of four new domestic destinations Mexicana is adding this month. Hermosillo, Chihuahua, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez join at the same time, expanding the airline’s network to 19 domestic destinations.

The Bajío–AIFA service operates Sunday through Friday on the following schedule:
- AIFA → Bajío: 06:20 departure, arriving 07:20
- Bajío → AIFA: 08:00 departure, arriving 09:00
- Sunday schedules differ slightly: AIFA → Bajío 16:50–17:50, return 18:30–19:30
Tickets are available through Mexicana’s official channels. Mexicana operates as a government-run carrier and fares are generally positioned below those of Volaris and Aeroméxico on the same routes.
Why this matters for Guanajuato visitors
Until now, the most direct way to reach Guanajuato from Mexico City was a roughly five-hour bus ride, or a flight to Querétaro or Léon followed by ground transport. The new Mexicana service provides a direct air link for the first time in several years, with an early-morning flight that allows a full day in the city on arrival.
Guanajuato city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its underground roadways, brightly coloured hillside houses, and the Callejón del Beso - a narrow alley where local legend says lovers guarantee seven years of good luck with a kiss from its third step. Travel time by taxi from BJX to the city centre is approximately 25 minutes.

Mexicana has been gradually rebuilding its domestic network since the airline was relaunched under state ownership.
