Volaris confirmed on 10 September 2026 that it is expanding its US network from Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) with five new nonstop routes, all launching in October. The carrier had already connected Guadalajara to Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, Houston, Dallas, and Phoenix — this expansion fills in a significant gap across the US eastern seaboard and mid-Atlantic.
The Five New Routes
Launching 15 October 2026:
- Guadalajara – Boston (BOS) — three times weekly
- Guadalajara – Nashville (BNA) — three times weekly
- Guadalajara – Atlanta (ATL) — three times weekly
- Guadalajara – Washington Dulles (IAD) — three times weekly
Launching 16 October 2026:
- Guadalajara – Raleigh-Durham (RDU) — three times weekly (Wednesdays, Fridays, Sundays)
Atlanta and Washington Dulles had originally been pencilled in for December; Volaris moved both launches forward to October alongside the other three new routes.
Why It Matters for Visitors
Guadalajara is Mexico’s second-largest city and the cultural capital of western Mexico — it’s the home of tequila, mariachi, and the traditional horseman known as the charro. For many years the city remained harder to reach from the US east coast than competitors like Cancún or Mexico City, requiring connections through a hub carrier.
The new Volaris routes change that. Travellers from Boston, Nashville, or Atlanta can now fly direct to Guadalajara in around four hours without the cost premium of a hub carrier like American or United. Volaris operates on a low-cost model, with base fares that are typically lower than the network carriers, though baggage and seat fees apply separately.
Guadalajara as a Base
Guadalajara makes a practical base for exploring the state of Jalisco and the broader Bajío region. Day trips from the city reach:
- Tequila (55 km northwest) — blue agave fields and distillery visits
- Lake Chapala and Ajijic (45 km southeast) — the largest lake in Mexico, with a substantial expat community and good walking trails along the northern shore
- Tlaquepaque and Tonalá (15–20 km southeast) — artisan markets and workshops producing the blown-glass, ceramics, and leather goods sold across Mexico
The city itself has a well-preserved colonial core around the Teatro Degollado and Cathedral Basilica, a neighbourhood called Tlaquepaque that functions independently as a craft-shopping destination, and a lively food scene built around birria, tortas ahogadas, and tejuino.
