Holbox is deliberately cut off - no paved roads on the island, golf carts for transport, no cars. That isolation is the point. But the surrounding area has some of the best wildlife and beach experiences in the Yucatán, and a 30-minute ferry to Chiquila opens up a range of options further afield.

Whale shark tours - offshore, mid-May to mid-September
The primary reason many visitors choose Holbox over other Yucatán destinations. Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus - the world’s largest fish, up to 12 m) gather in the Yum Balam protected area between Holbox and Isla Contoy in some of the highest concentrations found anywhere on the planet. Tours depart from Holbox’s main dock at 6–7 am, travel 30–50 minutes to where the aggregation has been spotted (guides communicate by radio), and allow 30–45 minutes of snorkelling alongside the sharks.
The water in this area is warm (26–29°C) and relatively shallow. Whale sharks are filter feeders - entirely harmless - and the experience of swimming alongside one is genuinely memorable. Regulations limit groups to 8 swimmers per shark and prohibit touching. Tour prices are approximately MXN $1,400–1,800 per person including equipment, life jacket, and guide. The season runs mid-May to mid-September; peak is July–August.
Book directly with a registered guide cooperative rather than hotels to avoid the highest markups. Isla Contoy - 16 km east, 35 minutes by boat
A protected national park island that feels genuinely wild after Holbox’s tourist-facing vibe. Isla Contoy hosts nesting colonies of nine seabird species, including magnificent frigatebirds, brown boobies, and red-footed boobies - the largest seabird nesting colony in the Mexican Caribbean. The island has a visitor centre (in three-language exhibitions on Caribbean ecology) and observation towers overlooking the lagoon.
The surrounding reef and sea grass beds are excellent for snorkelling - green sea turtles, nurse sharks, and colourful reef fish are common on the Contoy side. Tours from Holbox combine Contoy with a reef snorkelling stop en route (approximately MXN $1,200–1,600 per person, full day including lunch and gear).
Only 200 visitors are permitted on the island daily. Tours must use registered operators with Contoy permits - book through agencies displaying the SEMARNAT permit certificate. The island is accessible only by tour boat; there is no independent access.
Punta Mosquito and flamingos - 4 km from town
A rewarding half-morning that most visitors overlook. Punta Mosquito at the eastern tip of Holbox island is a shallow sandbar and mangrove estuary where a resident flock of flamingos feeds year-round. The count varies (often 50–200 birds), but the setting - flamingos reflected in still mirror-flat water at sunrise - is exceptional.
Golf cart from the main square costs approximately MXN $200–300 for a two-hour rental. The dirt track east of town can be muddy after rain; check conditions at your accommodation. A guided tour with a naturalist guide from town costs approximately MXN $300–500 per person and typically combines flamingos, the sandbar viewpoint, and bioluminescence if done at night (Holbox’s calm lagoon has strong bioluminescent plankton June–October).
Isla Pasión and sandbanks
Several small sandbars and cays within an hour of Holbox offer snorkelling and bird watching without the full-day commitment of Contoy. Isla Pasión (20 minutes by lancha) is a mangrove island with a small beach and good snorkelling; El Yalahau cenote and freshwater spring (20 minutes by boat) on the mainland across the lagoon is one of few accessible freshwater springs in this part of the Yucatán coast - used historically by Maya communities for drinking water. Most boat tours from Holbox combine these stops.
Lancha hire (private speedboat) from Holbox dock costs approximately MXN $800–1,500 per boat depending on destination; shared tours are significantly cheaper.
Río Lagartos - 120 km west of Chiquila, 2 hours from ferry
The flamingo capital of the Yucatán Peninsula. Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve protects the largest flamingo colony in Mexico - 40,000 or more birds during peak season (March–August) feeding in the shallow hypersaline estuaries. Boat tours from the village of Río Lagartos get within 30 m of the flocks, and the pink mass of birds against the bright white salt flats is extraordinary.
The village also offers tours to see spider and howler monkeys in the mangrove channels, and good fishing for those who arrange it in advance. The estuary is also home to a population of American crocodiles (hence the name - early Spanish explorers mistook them for the larger reptiles).
Getting there from Holbox: ferry to Chiquila (MXN ~$200, 30 min), then rental car west through Kantunilkín and Tizimín to Río Lagartos (2 hours). Boat tour approximately MXN $600–800 per boat.
Cobá ruins - 145 km from Chiquila, 2.5 hours by car
The one Maya site accessible as a day trip from Holbox with significant payoff. Cobá has the only major Maya pyramid in the Yucatán that can still be climbed (as of 2026, though this policy may change - check on arrival). The Nohoch Mul pyramid is 42 m tall - the highest in the Yucatán - and the 360° view over unbroken jungle from the top is unlike anything at Chichen Itza or Uxmal.
The site is also unusual for its sacbés - white stone causeways connecting outlying structures, one of which runs 100 km to the Yaxuná site near Chichen Itza. Cobá’s ruins are spread across 70 sq km of jungle; the main groups are reachable by foot, bicycle rental (approximately MXN $50), or tricycle taxi. Entry approximately MXN $90 as of 2026.

The ferry from Holbox to Chiquila runs frequently (approximately MXN $180–220 each way, 30 minutes) and is the gateway to all mainland day trips. Car rental is not available on Holbox itself - arrange car hire in advance through Chiquila or Cancún airport agencies if you plan mainland day trips. Holbox’s sandy streets mean most visitors use golf carts; golf cart rental on the island costs approximately MXN $600–800 per day.
Bioluminescent plankton in Holbox’s lagoon is a reason in itself for an evening boat trip (June–October, best on moonless nights). Many tour operators include this as an add-on to daytime excursions.
