Tourist Fees Now Apply at Cancún, Los Cabos & Puerto Vallarta
Three of Mexico’s most popular resort regions have confirmed or increased dedicated tourist fees for 2026, and travellers should account for them when budgeting a trip.
Baja California Sur — “Embrace It” Levy Rises to US$10
Los Cabos and the wider Baja California Sur state charge every international visitor the “Embrace It” (formerly Cuida BCS) levy. The fee stood at $488 MXN (roughly US$27) through mid-2026, but from August 2026 it increases to a flat US$10 per person — and will rise further to US$15 in the 2027–28 cycle. The levy applies to any visitor staying longer than 24 hours and is typically collected at accommodation on check-in. Cruise passengers are exempt.
Quintana Roo — Visitax Consolidated at 300 MXN
Visitors to Cancún, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen pay the Quintana Roo Visitax: 300 MXN (approximately US$15–18) per person, charged once per trip regardless of length of stay. Most travellers pay online at the Visitax portal before departure; the QR code must be presented at departure. Children under four are exempt.
Puerto Vallarta — New 160 MXN Fee for 2026
Puerto Vallarta introduced a new 160 MXN (roughly US$8.50) visitor tax for all foreign arrivals in 2026, including cruise ship passengers. The fee is collected at the point of accommodation or cruise terminal and funds local tourism infrastructure.
Federal Visitor Permit (DNR)
On top of state and city fees, Mexico’s federal Visitor Permit (DNR) rose to 983 MXN (approximately US$54) from January 2026. For air and sea arrivals this fee is typically embedded in your airline or cruise ticket, so check your booking confirmation to avoid paying twice.
What to Do Before You Travel
For Quintana Roo visitors, paying the Visitax online before flying avoids airport queues. For Baja California Sur and Puerto Vallarta, fees are settled on arrival at your hotel. Keep digital or printed confirmation of any fee paid — border and departure officers can request proof. See our Mexico budget guide for a full breakdown of what to expect to spend.
