Quick Answer

December through April is Cancún’s prime window: reliable sunshine, dry air, and calm Caribbean seas. November and May work well as shoulder months with lower prices and still-good conditions. See everything Cancún offers before you book, and secure your accommodation early for any December to April visit.

Season Overview

Cancún has two clear seasons - dry (December–April) and wet/hurricane (June–October) - with May and November acting as transitional months.

Peak Season: December to April

This five-month stretch is when Cancún operates at maximum capacity. December delivers warm days (24–28°C), clear skies, and Christmas holiday energy - hotel rates in the Hotel Zone hit their highest point of the year in the week between Christmas and New Year, with some properties charging three to four times their off-season rates. January sees a slight crowd dip after the holidays before picking back up in February.

March and early April are Spring Break months. American university students arrive in very large numbers, and the Hotel Zone party scene operates at full intensity. Prices remain very high. If you prefer a calmer beach experience, target February or late April instead.

The sea is calm and clear throughout peak season. Visibility for snorkelling around Isla Mujeres and the MUSA underwater museum is typically 20–30 metres. Water temperatures range from 25°C in January to 28°C by April.

Shoulder Season: May and November

May offers excellent value for a Cancún trip. Hurricane season officially starts June 1 but rarely brings serious storms in May. Temperatures are warm (28–32°C), the sea is perfect, and hotel rates drop significantly from their March peaks. The beaches are far less crowded, and you can often access Isla Mujeres or Cozumel day trips without queuing.

November is increasingly popular as a shoulder month. The rains have stopped, temperatures sit around 25–29°C, and prices are still 20–30% below December rates. Día de los Muertos (November 1–2) sees local ceremonies in Cancún’s downtown (Centro) that are worth seeking out.

Off Season / Rainy Season: June to October

June through October is officially hurricane season, and Cancún sits squarely in the Atlantic hurricane belt. The risk is real but unevenly distributed: June and early July rarely see major storms, while August, September, and early October are statistically the most dangerous months. Hurricane Gilbert (1988) and Wilma (2005) both caused severe damage to Cancún’s Hotel Zone.

Even without hurricanes, this period brings daily rain, high humidity (85–95%), and heat that feels oppressive away from air conditioning. July is a partial exception - Mexican school holidays drive a domestic tourism surge, keeping hotels busier than June or September.

Key Events and Festivals

  • Late March / Early April - Spring Break: The Hotel Zone’s bars and clubs operate at full capacity. Very loud, very crowded; book or avoid depending on preference.
  • December 23 – January 3 - Christmas and New Year: Maximum hotel prices and full beach occupancy. New Year’s Eve events at major hotels are heavily ticketed.
  • November 1–2 - Día de los Muertos: Celebrations in Cancún’s downtown Centro district; less visible in the Hotel Zone.
  • July - Mexican School Holidays: Domestic families fill mid-range hotels; a different but still busy atmosphere from Spring Break.
  • February - Whale Shark Season ends: Whale shark aggregations off Isla Holbox run approximately June to September; February is prime season for manta rays instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Cancún?
February and March offer the most reliable weather: low humidity, minimal rain, and sea temperatures around 26°C ideal for swimming and snorkelling. January is equally good but slightly cooler. All three months see high prices and crowds - book at least 8 weeks ahead.
What is the cheapest time to visit Cancún?
May and early June are the sweet spot for value. The peak crowds have cleared, weather is warm (28–32°C), and hurricane season hasn't seriously started yet. Hotel rates can be 25–40% lower than December or March. September is cheaper still but carries meaningful hurricane risk.
When should I avoid visiting Cancún?
August through October carries the highest hurricane risk, with September historically the most dangerous month for the Yucatán Peninsula. Humidity is extreme (often 90%+) and even non-hurricane weather brings heavy daily rain. Late March and early April (Spring Break) brings very large American student crowds and inflated prices.
