Peak Season: December to April
Guadalajara’s peak season is milder than coastal resort towns - there’s no single overwhelming influx, but December through April sees the highest international visitor numbers. The dry season brings clear skies, cool mornings (12–16°C), and warm afternoons (22–28°C) that are ideal for walking the historic centre, visiting the Guadalajara Cathedral and the Instituto Cultural Cabañas (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and exploring the craft markets in Tlaquepaque and Tonalá.
Christmas in Guadalajara is a significant cultural event. The city’s posada processions (December 16–24) are among the most traditional in Mexico, with neighbourhood celebrations and street food stalls around the Plaza de Armas and Expiatorio Church.
March and April are particularly good for day trips to the Tequila town (roughly 60km northwest) along the Agave Landscape UNESCO World Heritage corridor - the agave fields look striking in dry-season clarity and the distillery tours run at full capacity.
Shoulder Season: October, November, and May
October is Guadalajara’s hidden gem month. Post-rainy-season air quality is exceptional, the city’s parks and gardens are intensely green, and prices haven’t moved up to December levels. It’s an ideal base for day trips to Lake Chapala (Mexico’s largest lake, 45km south) and the village of Ajijic, both of which look their best after the rains.
November is anchored by the Tequila Festival (Festival de Tequila), typically held in late November or early December. Producers from across Jalisco gather for tastings, masterclasses, and parades in both Guadalajara and the town of Tequila itself. Hotel rates in the Chapultepec area spike for the festival weekend but are otherwise still moderate.
Off Season / Rainy Season: June to September
Daily rain typically arrives between 3–6pm and can be heavy, causing street flooding in the lower parts of the historic centre. Mornings are reliably clear, making early starts feasible for markets and museum visits. The surrounding countryside around Guadalajara turns green and the barrancas (ravines) fill with waterfalls.
September is the notable exception for crowd levels. The International Mariachi Festival (Festival Internacional del Mariachi y la Charrería), held in the last week of August through the first week of September, fills the Plaza Tapatía and surrounding venues with world-class mariachi performances. Hotels in and around the historic centre book out for this event - plan well ahead or stay in Zapopan instead.
