Peak Season: October (Cervantino) and December
Guanajuato’s single biggest event is the Festival Internacional Cervantino, held over three weeks in October (typically the second, third, and fourth weeks). Named in honour of Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote), this internationally prestigious arts festival brings theatre, dance, music, and performance from across the world to Guanajuato’s plazas, theatres, and streets. The Teatro Juárez, Plaza de San Roque, and the underground callejones host performances ranging from free street acts to ticketed orchestral concerts. Hotels throughout the city - and even in nearby cities like León and San Miguel de Allende - fill completely during festival weeks.
December is the second peak period. Christmas posadas and New Year celebrations animate Guanajuato’s famous callejón (alleyway) culture - the Callejón del Beso (Alley of the Kiss, just 69cm wide at one point) is particularly busy during the festive season. Temperatures drop to 5–7°C at night in December, making warm layers essential.
Shoulder Season: March, April, and November
March and April offer Guanajuato at its most relaxed. The dry season delivers clear skies that show the city’s colourful architecture - the terracotta, yellow, pink, and blue facades climbing the ravine walls - in the best possible light. The city’s many museums are accessible without queuing, and the funicular to Pípila statue (offering panoramic views over the centro) runs without waiting.
November is excellent immediately post-Cervantino. Prices drop from October’s elevated levels, the city is still lively with visitors, and Day of the Dead celebrations (November 1–2) add to the atmosphere. Guanajuato’s famous Mummy Museum (Museo de las Momias) - housing naturally mummified remains found in the city’s cemetery - is thematically relevant around Día de los Muertos and sees heavier crowds in this period.
Off Season / Rainy Season: June to September
Afternoon rain falls reliably from June through September, usually between 3–6pm. Guanajuato’s underground tunnel road system (a converted 18th-century river diversion) means the city largely avoids the street flooding that affects other Mexican cities in rainy season. Mornings are clear and mild, and the city’s outdoor restaurants, market stalls, and callejones are all accessible.
The colourful hillside neighbourhoods look particularly striking after summer rains, and the hiking paths above the city (to the Cristo Rey monument on Cerro del Cubilete, 10km from the city centre) are verdant. Hotel prices in July and August are the lowest of the year.
