Quick Answer
November through April is the best period for Puerto Vallarta: dry days, calm Banderas Bay, and world-class humpback whale watching from December to March. November offers the best balance of conditions and value before Christmas prices kick in. Plan your Puerto Vallarta trip and book your stay early for any winter visit.
Season Overview
Puerto Vallarta sits on the Pacific coast in Jalisco state. Unlike Cancún, it faces no hurricane risk from the Atlantic - Pacific storms are rarer and less intense, though not impossible.

Peak Season: December to March
Puerto Vallarta’s dry season draws visitors from across North America, making it one of Mexico’s busiest resort towns from December to March. December is particularly popular: the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe (December 12) is celebrated with processions down the Malecon, and humpback whale watching season opens from around late November through March. Whale watching tours depart from the marina and operate on Banderas Bay, which is one of the world’s top humpback whale nursery grounds. Whale sightings are nearly guaranteed from December to February.
Christmas and New Year pricing is steep - boutique hotels in the Zona Romántica and beachfront properties in the Hotel Zone charge their highest rates. Book four to six months ahead for the December 23 to January 3 period.
February and March are excellent if you want peak conditions without quite the holiday frenzy. The festival circuit - Puerto Vallarta’s Film Festival is in November, and the Gay Pride celebration in late May - brings bursts of activity, but the main beach scene is steady throughout peak season.
Shoulder Season: April, May, and October
April sees Spring Break wind down and prices moderate. Conditions remain excellent - dry skies, water temperatures around 24–26°C - and you’ll find better rates on the Zona Romántica’s smaller boutique guesthouses. By late April, some low-season deals begin appearing.
May is a genuine value window. Rain hasn’t fully arrived yet, mornings are reliably clear, and afternoon showers are light compared to July or September. Ocean swimming is good, and the jungle roads leading to waterfalls such as El Salto are fully accessible.
October is underrated. The Pacific rain season winds down significantly through the month, and by late October conditions are almost dry-season quality. Hotel rates are still low-season prices - often 30–40% below December - making it one of the year’s best-value months.
Off Season / Rainy Season: June to September
Daily rainfall during rainy season typically arrives between 4–7pm and can be intense. Mornings are usually clear and warm, making beach time feasible if you’re flexible with your schedule. The surrounding Sierra Madre jungle turns intensely green, and waterfalls near the villages of San Sebastián and Yelapa (accessible by boat) run at their most impressive.
The humidity is the main challenge - 80–90% on many days, making outdoor activity uncomfortable from mid-afternoon onward. September is the wettest and least visited month of the year, with Pacific tropical storm risk real but lower than the Atlantic risk Cancún faces.
