General Rafael Buelna International Airport (MZT) sits southeast of the city, noticeably further from the hotel zone than most Mexican beach resort airports. That 25 km distance makes getting your transfer right more important than at closer-in airports like OAX or PVR. Fortunately the system is straightforward, and Mazatlán’s unique transport culture - with its iconic pulmonías - makes getting around easy once you arrive.
Airport Overview
MZT handles domestic routes from Mexico City (Aeromexico, Volaris, VivaAerobus) and seasonal international services from Los Angeles, Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, and several Canadian cities. The airport has a single terminal with arrivals and departures on one level. Facilities include an official taxi desk, ATMs (HSBC, Bancomer), a currency exchange counter, and a few rental car desks.
Official Airport Taxis
The reliable standard option. Inside arrivals, the official SITIO taxi desk sells zone-based vouchers at fixed prices.

Several companies run shared minivans from MZT, primarily during peak winter season (November–March) when charter flights from Canada and the US increase arrival frequency. These are not always available in off-season.

Both operate in Mazatlán with reasonable coverage in the tourist zones. Airport availability is less consistent.

If the app shows availability at MZT, rideshare is the cheapest option for solo travellers and couples. During late-night arrivals (after 10 pm) or busy holiday periods, driver supply at the airport can be limited.

Mazatlán’s Unique Transport: Pulmonías
Once in Mazatlán, you will encounter the iconic pulmonía - an open-air taxi converted from a Mexican-made vehicle (typically an old VW or Datsun) with no roof or doors, running on four wheels like a motorised buggy. They are unique to Mazatlán and the most fun way to travel short distances along the Malecón and between the Zona Dorada and Centro Histórico.
Fares for pulmonías are negotiated before departure:
- Within Zona Dorada: MXN $40–80
- Zona Dorada to Centro Histórico: MXN $100–180
- Malecón length (approx 3 km): MXN $60–100
Pulmonías are not air-conditioned and have no luggage storage - great for short hops in the heat, not suitable for airport runs with bags.
Standard eco-taxis (painted green) and regular sedans also operate on similar routes at lower fares than pulmonías for longer distances.
Car Rental at MZT
Hertz, National, and local operators have desks in the arrivals hall. Day rates from approximately MXN $600–900 for a compact.
Having a car is useful for:
- Day-trips inland: Concordia and Copala, the colonial mountain villages 60–90 km east via Highway 40
- El Quelite: A preserved colonial village 40 km north
- North to Novolato or beaches: Punta Cerritos and other Pacific beaches north of the city
- Highway 15 north: Road-tripping toward Culiacán and beyond (clear highway, flat terrain)
Note: within Mazatlán itself, pulmonías, taxis, and Uber are more practical than driving. Parking in Centro Histórico is difficult and many of the narrow streets around the Plazuela Machado are pedestrian-priority on weekends.
Practical Tips
- Cash on arrival: Withdraw MXN from the ATMs inside arrivals - the airport Bancomer and HSBC machines are reliable. Many pulmonías and local restaurants outside the tourist zone are cash-only.
- Peak season: Mazatlán’s high season runs November through March, with Carnival (February) being the biggest event. Airport transfers during Carnival weekend should be pre-booked at least 72 hours in advance - demand exceeds supply.
- Return transport: Mazatlán taxis are metered within the city (unlike some Mexican destinations), which makes return airport runs transparent. Meter fare from Zona Dorada to MZT is typically MXN $250–380. Agree on the metered fare before departing.
- Night arrivals: The road from MZT into the city passes through commercial and industrial zones without much lighting. Well-travelled and safe, but unfamiliar at night - use pre-booked transfers if your flight arrives after 9 pm.
- Toll road: The cuota (toll) autopista from the airport cuts travel time by 5–10 minutes versus the libre (free) road. Most official taxis use it - the toll is included in the voucher price.
