Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) sits in a central position - north of Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town, south of the Hotel Zone, and adjacent to the marina district. This geography means transfer distances are short compared to other Mexican beach airports, but the lack of public transport to the hotel zone still makes ground transport planning worthwhile.
Airport Layout
PVR has a single terminal building with domestic and international arrivals on the ground floor. Airlines served include American, Delta, United, Alaska, Air Canada, WestJet, Volaris, VivaAerobus, and Aeromexico. International arrivals pass through Mexican customs and immigration before reaching the main arrivals hall, where all official transport desks are located.
The terminal sits roughly 5 km north of Old Town and 3 km south of the marina district - meaning most hotel zone destinations are less than 15 minutes away in normal traffic.
Authorised Airport Taxis
The standard option for most arrivals. Inside the arrivals hall, look for the official SITIO AEROPUERTO taxi voucher desk. Pay a fixed zone-based fare before exiting - no negotiating with individual drivers.

All prices are per vehicle, not per person. A party of four paying MXN $520 to Old Town works out to MXN $130 per head. Journey times are 10–40 minutes depending on destination and traffic, which is especially heavy on the coastal highway during peak hours (4–7 pm).
Private Transfer (Pre-Booked)
For groups of 3 or more, a pre-booked private transfer often costs less per person than the airport taxi vouchers, and avoids the arrivals hall queues during peak season. Companies including Puerto Vallarta Transfers, Vallarta Vip Transfer, and Best Shore Excursions offer meet-and-greet at the arrivals gate.

Uber and DiDi
Uber operates in Puerto Vallarta and pickup is available from the designated app zone outside the terminal. DiDi is also active and typically 10–15% cheaper than Uber.

This is the cheapest option for solo travellers and couples. Note: Uber and DiDi availability at the airport can be patchy during busy periods - some drivers decline airport pickups, and surge pricing applies on holiday weekends and during festival periods. Have the official taxi counter as a backup.
Shared Shuttles
Several transfer companies operate shared minivans from the airport. You share with other passengers heading to the same general zone, which reduces cost but adds time for drop-offs.

Car Rental at PVR
All major rental companies - Hertz, Avis, Budget, National, Alamo, Enterprise - operate from the terminal. Renting is worth considering if you plan to explore the Riviera Nayarit coast independently, visit Sayulita on multiple days, or day-trip to San Sebastián del Oeste in the Sierra Madre.
The coastal highway (Mexico Highway 200 / Libramiento Norte) is in good condition from PVR north to Sayulita. South toward Puerto Vallarta, the single-lane coastal road carries heavy traffic during peak hours.
Getting to Riviera Nayarit
The Riviera Nayarit coast - Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias, La Cruz, Punta de Mita, Sayulita, San Pancho - is north of the airport across the Ameca River and the Jalisco-Nayarit state line. PVR’s location means it is actually closer to Nuevo Vallarta than to Puerto Vallarta’s Old Town.

ADO buses to Tepic and Guadalajara depart from Puerto Vallarta’s downtown bus station (approximately 10 km from the airport), not directly from the terminal.

Practical Tips
- Avoid unsolicited offers. PVR arrivals attract unofficial taxi and tour touts immediately outside the exit doors. Use the official voucher desk inside the terminal.
- High season queues. In December and March (spring break), wait times at the official taxi desk can reach 40 minutes. Pre-booking eliminates this.
- Return transfer. Your hotel concierge can arrange a return airport transfer. Alternatively, Uber works reliably in central Puerto Vallarta; surge pricing around 4–6 am for early flights is common during peak season.
- Cash. ATMs (HSBC, Santander, Banamex) are available inside arrivals. Withdraw some MXN - some taxi voucher desks prefer cash, and tips for drivers are standard.
- No luggage storage. PVR does not have a formal left-luggage facility - if your accommodation won’t hold bags, downtown Puerto Vallarta has several paid luggage storage services near the Malecón.
- Currency. ATMs in arrivals dispense MXN. USD is widely accepted for transport in the Hotel Zone and Riviera Nayarit.
