Puerto Vallarta runs south to north along Banderas Bay - Mexico’s deepest bay and one of the country’s most beautiful Pacific settings. The city divides cleanly into its historic south (Zona Romántica and Centro) and its modern resort north (the Hotel Zone and Marina), with the Sierra Madre providing a jungle backdrop to everything. Neighbourhood Guide
Zona Romántica (El Centro / Old Town): The most atmospheric and walkable part of Puerto Vallarta. Streets are cobblestone, the architecture is traditional, and the Cuale River island separates the neighbourhood from Centro proper. You’re a 5-minute walk from Playa de los Muertos (the main public beach), the Malecón, and the dense concentration of independent restaurants and LGBTQ+-friendly bars. Best for independent travellers who want character over convenience.
Centro and the Malecón: Just north of the Río Cuale, this is Puerto Vallarta’s civic heart - the main church (Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), the Malecón boardwalk, and the transition zone between Old Town feel and modern city. Slightly more traffic noise but excellent for restaurant access and nightlife proximity.
Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera Norte): North of downtown, this is where the large all-inclusive and resort properties concentrate. Beaches here (Playa las Glorias, Playa Camarones) are accessible but typically less lively than Playa de los Muertos. Better suited to families and travellers who want poolside resort life without needing to leave the property.
Marina Vallarta: The northernmost section before the airport - primarily upscale condos, a golf course, and a marina with restaurants. Quieter than Zona Romántica, better for self-catering stays of a week or more.
Nuevo Vallarta (Riviera Nayarit): Technically across the state border in Nayarit, 15 minutes north. Mega-resort strip - enormous all-inclusive properties with private beach sections. Convenient if you’re at one resort the entire stay; impractical for exploring PV independently.

Hotel Encino on Juárez in Centro is central, no-frills, and functional - the kind of place where a solo traveller or budget couple appreciates the location above the amenities. From approximately MXN 700 per night.
Hostel PV Backpackers near the Río Cuale offers dorm beds from approximately MXN 250 and private rooms from MXN 750 - a sociable base with kitchen access and the Zona Romántica restaurant scene immediately outside.
Hotel Ana Liz in Zona Romántica strikes a balance between price and quality - an established family-run property with ensuite rooms and a small courtyard. From approximately MXN 900 per night as of 2026.
For extended stays, the Emiliano Zapata neighbourhood in Zona Romántica has several short-term rental apartments from MXN 900–1,400 per night with kitchen facilities - often better value than hotels for stays of 5 nights or more.

Hotel Playa Conchas Chinas sits on a quieter stretch of beach just south of Zona Romántica - a smaller property (28 rooms) with a pool, direct beach steps, and a genuinely relaxed pace that contrasts with the busy Hotel Zone strips. From approximately MXN 2,200 per night.
Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa in the Hotel Zone offers non-all-inclusive luxury at a mid-range entry price point - a full service spa, beach club, and multiple dining options without committing to an all-inclusive plan. From approximately MXN 3,500 per night.

Reserve 3–5 months ahead for winter.
The St. Regis Punta Mita on the Punta Mita peninsula - 45 minutes north - delivers the most secluded luxury in the greater PV region: a private beach bay, two Jack Nicklaus golf courses, butler service, and a 3,000 m² spa. Non-all-inclusive from approximately MXN 18,000 per suite per night.
Casa Cupula in Amapas hill is an adults-only boutique with 18 suites and a strong LGBTQ+ following - three infinity pools cascading down the hillside, exceptional service, and some of the best bay views in Puerto Vallarta. From approximately MXN 4,500 per suite but includes extensive breakfast.
Imanta Resort Punta de Mita combines tented jungle glamping with a luxury price point - 15 private casitas and tents in a private nature reserve 45 minutes from PV. From approximately MXN 12,000 per night as of 2026.
Transport Tips
From the airport (PVR): Official taxi booths inside arrivals quote fixed rates - approximately MXN 250–400 to the Hotel Zone, MXN 350–500 to Zona Romántica. Uber operates from PVR at lower rates but requires arriving at a designated pickup zone. No direct bus.
Within Puerto Vallarta: Local buses (camiones) run the full north-south corridor for MXN 10–15 per journey - reliable but slow. Uber operates city-wide and is the best value for late-night returns. Taxis from the Hotel Zone to Zona Romántica cost approximately MXN 100–150. Walking is practical within each neighbourhood; the Malecón is the fastest pedestrian route between Centro and Zona Romántica.
Day trips: The Marietas Islands (UNESCO biosphere, closed-beach snorkelling) depart from La Cruz Marina, 30 minutes north by road. Sayulita (the surf village) is 40 minutes by bus or collective taxi from Bucerias. Tour operators in Zona Romántica run jungle zip-line, Tequila Express, and Banderas Bay sailing tours daily.
Booking Tips
Puerto Vallarta’s high season peak runs from Christmas through March - Christmas week and Semana Santa (Easter) are the hardest to book and the most expensive. November and early December often represent the best value-to-quality ratio: dry weather, comfortable temperatures (26–28°C), and rates 15–20% below February peaks. The Hotel Zone and Nuevo Vallarta fill faster than Zona Romántica because resort inventory is smaller relative to demand. If you’re booking all-inclusive, confirm whether the rate is per-person or per-room - PV resorts are inconsistent on this point. Package deals combining flights from US gateway cities (Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas) with hotel often undercut booking rooms separately.

Zona Romántica (mid-range): Hacienda San Angel (from approximately MXN 3,500/night) occupies a hillside property with Pacific views, daily breakfast, and access to a private beach club. Hotel Mercurio (from approximately MXN 1,800/night) is a popular adults-only, gay-friendly property near Los Muertos beach.
El Centro (budget/mid-range): Hotel Posada de Roger (from approximately MXN 600/night) is basic but clean, close to the Malecón. Hotel Los Cuatro Vientos (from approximately MXN 850/night) is a small hilltop property with a bar and city views. Hotel Eloisa (from approximately MXN 1,500/night) has a central location near the main church and a rooftop pool. Hotel Zone (mid-range): Sunscape Puerto Vallarta Resort (from approximately MXN 2,500/night, all-inclusive) is a reliable family all-inclusive with a large pool complex and direct beach access. Krystal Vallarta (from approximately MXN 2,800/night) is a longstanding Hotel Zone resort with multiple pools and a good beachfront location. Grand Fiesta Americana Puerto Vallarta (from approximately MXN 4,500/night) provides reliable luxury and a good beach club.
Marina Vallarta: Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel (adults-only all-inclusive, from approximately MXN 6,500/night) has one of the better spa programmes in the city.
