Peak Season: November to April
Puerto Escondido’s peak season runs from November through April, anchored by the Zicatela Pipeline’s surf season. The Zicatela - considered one of the world’s top beach breaks - produces hollow, fast waves from October through March. At its peak (typically November through February), the surf here is for experienced surfers only: waves regularly reach 4–6 metres and the shore break is extremely powerful. Watching the Pipeline from the cliff-side bars and restaurants is free and spectacular regardless of surfing ability.
The sheltered beaches, Playa Principal (the central bay) and Playa Carrizalillo (a smaller protected cove to the south), offer calm swimming throughout peak season. Snorkelling at Carrizalillo is good in the dry season with visibility of 5–10 metres.
December and January bring Christmas visitors and a temporary spike in prices at the town’s better hotels. The surf community adds a specific character to Puerto Escondido - international surf coaches, photographers, and competition watchers during the Surf Classic period (see events below).
Shoulder Season: October and May
October is Puerto Escondido’s surf shoulder season - the Pacific swell is building toward its November peak, and accommodation prices are still at low-to-mid season levels. The tail end of rainy season means brief afternoon showers, but mornings are often clear and warm. Surfers who want waves without the December crowds often target late October.
May is the ideal month for beginner surfers. The winter swell has moderated to smaller, cleaner waves on Zicatela, and the beach break at Playa Zicatela produces consistent 1–2 metre waves suitable for surf lessons. Multiple surf schools operate year-round in Puerto Escondido, and May is when conditions align well for beginners: warm water (27°C), lighter crowds, and manageable wave sizes.
Off Season / Rainy Season: June to September
June through September is the Pacific rainy season. Rain arrives daily - often in the afternoon and evening - and the Pacific swell generates rough seas that close the main beaches to swimming. The surf at Zicatela is powerful and unpredictable, and Playa Principal can have dangerous shore break.
The town retains its character during low season. The backstreet restaurants, mezcal bars, and fish taco stands of Rinconada and Zicatela continue operating, and the relaxed atmosphere - with mostly local and experienced traveller crowds - is part of Puerto Escondido’s appeal. The nearby Manialtepec Lagoon (12km west) and Chacahua Lagoon National Park (72km west) are accessible year-round for boat tours and bird watching.
