Peak Season: December and Semana Santa
San Miguel de Allende has two distinct peak windows. December through early January is the major one. The city’s posadas (December 16–24) are unusually elaborate, with marching bands, fireworks, and candlelit processions through the historic centre every night. The Plaza Principal fills with a Christmas market, hotels charge their annual maximum rates, and the narrow cobblestone streets - beautiful at any time - feel genuinely crowded. New Year’s Eve sees large fireworks displays and street celebrations.
Semana Santa (Holy Week, March or April) is the second peak. San Miguel’s religious processions are among the most traditional in Mexico’s Bajío region, drawing domestic visitors from Querétaro, Guanajuato, and Mexico City in large numbers. Hotels in the centro fill 6–8 weeks ahead.
Outside these windows, December through April is technically high season but at a lower intensity - January and February are good months where conditions are excellent and post-holiday crowds have thinned.
Shoulder Season: March, April, October, and November
March and April sit in an excellent position: dry weather (temperatures 9–27°C), clear skies, and the approach of the rains that will make the highland landscape vivid by May. The city’s thriving arts scene - galleries, workshops, and the weekly Jardín market - is fully active.
October and November stand out for their post-rainy-season conditions. The surrounding hills around San Miguel, covered in agave and desert scrub, look their most vivid after summer rains. Day of the Dead (November 1–2) is observed in San Miguel’s historic cemetery (Panteón Civil) with marigold altars; quieter than Oaxaca but atmospheric. The city’s arts scene intensifies in October with gallery openings and cultural events.
Off Season / Rainy Season: June to September
Rain arrives reliably in June and falls most afternoons through September - typically between 2–5pm, often clearing by evening. Mornings are dry and clear, temperatures are mild (12–24°C), and the city functions normally. The surrounding countryside turns an intense green that makes the drive to nearby hot springs (El Charco del Ingenio is the most accessible) particularly scenic.
September 15–16 (Independence Day) is a major exception. San Miguel de Allende holds some of the country’s most celebrated Independence Day events - fireworks, music, and historical re-enactments - drawing large crowds to the Jardín Principal. Hotels in the centro book out months ahead for this weekend despite being in rainy season.
