Cozumel International Airport (CZM) is a compact facility serving Mexicoβs most popular diving island. Unlike the mainlandβs major airports, CZM handles a modest volume of flights - domestic connections from Mexico City and Cancun, plus seasonal charters from the US and Canada. Most international visitors to Cozumel actually arrive into Cancun and transfer by ferry, so check your booking carefully before planning ground transport.
The airport sits approximately 4 km north of San Miguel de Cozumel, the islandβs only town and the centre of its hotel, restaurant, and dive shop activity. The drive to town is short, but with limited transport options at the terminal, it pays to know what to expect before you land.
From the Terminal
Cozumel airport has a single passenger terminal. On exiting arrivals, you will find:
- Official taxi rank - immediately outside the terminal exit, with a staffed booth displaying official fares
- Rental car desks - inside the terminal, staffed by Budget, Hertz, and local operators
- Private transfer vehicles - for pre-booked services, drivers wait outside arrivals with name signs
There is no ADO bus, public bus, or colectivo serving the terminal.
Taxi (Most Common Option)
Official taxis from the airport operate on a fixed-rate zone system set by the municipal government. Fares are posted at the taxi counter and collected in advance - pay at the desk, hand the receipt to your driver.
Approximate taxi fares from CZM (as of 2026):
| Destination | Approx. Fare | Journey Time |
|---|---|---|
| San Miguel de Cozumel centro | ~MXN $140β180 | 8β12 min |
| San Miguel norte (north hotels) | ~MXN $160β200 | 10β15 min |
| Coral Princess / north resort zone | ~MXN $200β280 | 12β18 min |
| MeliΓ‘ Cozumel / Playa Azul area | ~MXN $220β300 | 15β20 min |
| Cozumel Palace (north end) | ~MXN $240β320 | 18β22 min |
| Southern beach clubs (El Cielo area) | ~MXN $350β500 | 25β35 min |
Note: the eastern coast (Playa Chen RΓo, Punta Morena) is significantly farther and less served by taxis - arrange transport in advance if staying out there.
Private Transfer
For groups or those arriving late at night, a pre-booked private transfer from Kiwitaxi or Welcome Pickups provides a fixed fare confirmed before you travel. The driver meets you with a name sign outside arrivals, and the price does not fluctuate with waiting time or traffic.
Private transfers cost approximately MXN $350β600 for a private vehicle to most hotel zones, depending on the operator and vehicle type. For groups of 3 or more, the per-person cost often undercuts the taxi rank price.
Car Rental
Car rental at CZM is straightforward - Budget, Hertz, and a handful of local agencies have desks inside the arrivals hall. A small car (Nissan March or similar) starts from approximately MXN $550β800 per day as of 2026, with unlimited mileage on the island.
Compare car hire rates for Cozumel before you travel - pre-booking online is typically 20β30% cheaper than walking up to the desk on arrival.
Driving on Cozumel is easy: the island road is single-lane, speed limits are low, and the circumference route is well-signed. Bear in mind that fuel stations are limited to the San Miguel area, so fill up before heading to the southern or eastern coast.
Golf cart and scooter rentals are available in town (not at the airport), starting from approximately MXN $400 per day. A popular option for a single day of exploring - just confirm insurance and security deposits before you drive away.
Getting Around the Island
| Area | Distance from Airport | Transport |
|---|---|---|
| San Miguel de Cozumel centro | ~4 km | Taxi 8β12 min |
| North resort corridor | ~6β10 km | Taxi 12β20 min |
| International Pier / cruise terminal | ~5 km | Taxi 10 min |
| Palancar Reef beach clubs | ~22 km | Taxi 30 min or rental car |
| Eastern coast (Playa Chen RΓo) | ~25 km | Rental car recommended |
Ferries to the Mainland
If you are connecting to or from Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya, note that the ferry terminal (Muelle Fiscal in central San Miguel) is separate from the airport. Ferry services to Playa del Carmen (45 minutes) depart roughly every 45β60 minutes throughout the day and into the evening. Approximate fare: MXN $280 each way as of 2026.
Plan to reach the ferry dock at least 20 minutes before departure, particularly during busy cruise-ship days when downtown Cozumel can experience traffic delays.
Practical Tips
- Airport size: CZM is a small airport with limited food options in the pre-security area. If your flight is delayed, San Miguel has plenty of restaurants a short taxi ride away.
- No metered taxis: All taxis at Cozumel airport charge fixed zone fares. Prices are posted at the official desk - always pay before boarding.
- Cruise ships: On days with multiple cruise ships docked, the downtown area near the ferry pier can be crowded. If arriving on a busy cruise day, allow extra time for the taxi journey.
- Pre-booking advantage: For early-morning arrivals, pre-booking a transfer ensures your driver is there regardless of domestic flight delays. Walk-up taxis can be scarce on slow-traffic days with few flights.
- Currency: ATMs are available in San Miguel town. The airport has limited currency exchange - bring some MXN $200β400 in cash for the taxi fare.
Plan your trip: airport transfers Β· car hire Β· travel insurance.
