Mexico in June: Rainy Season Begins, Whale Sharks, and Quiet Beaches

Pacific coast beach in June Mexico

June marks the official start of the rainy season across most of Mexico, but this doesn’t mean what people often assume. Rain typically falls in heavy afternoon showers (1-3 hours), not all-day downpours. Mornings are usually clear. June is one of the lowest-tourist months of the year, with genuine low-season prices across all regions.

How the rainy season actually works

In Mexico’s lowland areas (Caribbean coast, Pacific coast), rain falls mainly in the afternoon (2-6 pm) in concentrated showers. Mornings are clear and hot. You can structure your day around this pattern — beach and outdoor activities in the morning, indoor or shade activities in the afternoon. Evenings often clear up again.

In highland areas (Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Cristóbal), the rain pattern is similar: afternoon showers that clear by early evening. The highlands are cooler and more comfortable than the coast.

The rainy season is not the same as hurricane season in practical terms. Early June sees some tropical storm activity but the peak hurricane risk is August-October. June is statistically one of the safest months within the hurricane calendar.

What’s good in June

Whale sharks: June-September is the best period for whale shark encounters off Holbox and the Yucatán north coast. The aggregation grows through June. Far fewer tour boats than July-August, meaning more time in the water per encounter.

Sea turtle nesting: Olive Ridley turtles begin nesting on Pacific coast beaches in June. Leatherback and green turtles nest on Caribbean beaches. Volunteer programmes in Oaxacan coast towns (Mazunte, Escobilla) welcome participants — June is the start of the season when help is most needed.

Cenotes: June’s heat makes cenote swimming very appealing. Tourist crowds are lower than July-August, and the cenotes themselves are unaffected by surface weather. Water clarity begins to decrease slightly as the rains add runoff, but the major cenotes around Valladolid and Tulum remain clear.

Oaxacan coast (Puerto Escondido, Huatulco): surf is building with consistent southern swells, turtle season is starting, and both towns have breathing room. Puerto Escondido’s Zicatela beach produces world-class waves from June through September.

Weather by region

Yucatán and Caribbean: 31-34°C, increasingly humid, afternoon showers. Morning beach time is excellent. Sargassum seaweed may begin accumulating on some Riviera Maya beaches.

Pacific coast: 28-32°C, rainy season beginning. Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita see regular afternoon rain from June. The ocean is warm enough for extended snorkelling and diving.

Mexico City: 20-25°C, afternoon rain, pleasant mornings. A good month for the city — the rain keeps dust down and the air feels cleaner than in the dry months.

Oaxaca City: 24-27°C, some afternoon rain. Good for exploring with fewer tourists. The surrounding valleys and archaeological sites (Monte Albán, Mitla) are green and atmospheric.

Prices and crowds

June offers some of the lowest prices of the year. Caribbean coast resorts run significant promotions, and hotels in colonial cities rarely sell out. Domestic tourism picks up slightly around Father’s Day (third Sunday of June) but the impact is minor compared to Semana Santa or summer holidays.

Hurricane season note

The Atlantic and Gulf hurricane season officially begins 1 June. Statistically, June has very low hurricane activity — the significant risk months are August-October. Travel insurance with hurricane coverage is advisable for Caribbean coast bookings from June onwards, but the actual probability of disruption in June is low.

What to pack for June

A lightweight rain jacket or compact umbrella is essential — you will encounter afternoon rain. Quick-dry clothing is more practical than cotton in the humid lowlands. Waterproof bags or dry bags protect electronics during sudden downpours. Mosquito repellent becomes more important as the rainy season brings standing water — particularly in the Yucatán lowlands and along the Pacific coast.
