Bahías de Huatulco Airport (HUX) is a compact regional airport on the Oaxacan coast, serving one of Mexico’s most beautiful - and least crowded - resort destinations. Arrivals are minimal hassle: the terminal is small, customs is quick, and you’re outside in the Oaxacan heat within 20 minutes of landing. The transport system is equally straightforward, though options are limited compared to Cancún or PVR.
Airport Overview
HUX handles both domestic flights (primarily from Mexico City on Aeromexico and Volaris) and some international charter services, including seasonal routes from Canada and Europe. The terminal has a single arrivals area with official taxi desks, a small currency exchange counter, and ATMs (Banamex and HSBC).
There are no rideshare apps, no official public bus connection, and no train. Your options are official taxi, pre-booked private transfer, or car rental.
Official Airport Taxis
The main option for most arrivals. Official SITIO taxis operate from a desk inside the terminal. Fares are zone-based and fixed - pay the voucher price at the desk before heading outside to your vehicle.

Shared Shuttles
Some operators offer shared shuttle services during high-traffic arrival windows, particularly flights from Mexico City. These are not always available outside peak season (November–April) - confirm in advance if you’re arriving in summer.

No Uber or DiDi
Huatulco does not have Uber or DiDi. This is relevant to planning not just your arrival transfer but your day-to-day transport within the destination. Getting between bays relies on:
- Local taxis: Plentiful in La Crucecita and Santa Cruz. Fares between bays typically run MXN $80–200 depending on distance. Always agree the price before getting in.
- Colectivo taxis: Route-based shared taxis (usually white pickups or vans) run between La Crucecita and the main bays for approximately MXN $15–30 per person. Slower but cheap.
- Rental car: The most practical option for exploring remote bays independently.
Car Rental at HUX
Hertz, Europcar, and Thrifty (via local licensees) operate at HUX. Day rates from approximately MXN $600–900 for a standard vehicle as of 2026. Having a car opens up:
- Remote bays: Cacaluta, Chachacual, and San Agustín require a dirt road or boat access - a 4x4 helps for the unpaved sections to Cacaluta.
- Coastal road west: Puerto Ángel (45 km), Zipolite (50 km), and Mazunte (55 km) are accessible along Highway 200.
- Puerto Escondido: 140 km west on Highway 175 (mountain road, 2.5 hours) or via Highway 200 (coastal, approximately 2 hours).
- Oaxaca City: 290 km north on Highway 175 - a 4.5–5 hour mountain drive. Not recommended without daylight travel.
The Nine Bays
Huatulco’s resort area is organised around nine named bays along a 35 km stretch of coast. Knowing which bay your hotel is in before arrival helps you estimate transfer cost and time.

Practical Tips
- Cash is important: ATMs in Huatulco’s bays can run out of notes during long weekends and holiday periods. Withdraw MXN at the airport ATM before departing the terminal.
- No rideshare: Plan day-to-day transport around taxis and rental cars - there is no Uber in Huatulco. Your hotel can usually arrange local taxi services for in-resort transport.
- Airport hours: HUX is a regional airport and processes one or two flights at a time. Queues at the official taxi desk are usually short (under 10 minutes) except immediately after the Mexico City morning flight.
- Return transfer: Book your return airport taxi through your hotel or a pre-booked operator. During peak season (Christmas/New Year, Semana Santa), demand for airport taxis can exceed supply in the early morning.
- Insect repellent at arrival: Huatulco’s mangrove environment means mosquitoes are active in the coastal lowlands, especially in the evening. Pack repellent in your carry-on rather than checked bags.
