Mexico in March: Spring Break, Whale Sharks, and the End of Dry Season
March marks the tail end of Mexico’s peak dry season. The weather is at its best across the Caribbean, but spring break brings significant crowds and price spikes to the main resort areas. For those willing to look beyond Cancun, this remains one of the best weather months in the country.
Spring break crowds
Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum receive very large spring break groups from US colleges throughout March. The Hotel Zone in Cancun becomes noticeably rowdier during this period — pool parties, organised bar crawls, and beach events dominate the strip. Prices for hotels in the Hotel Zone can increase 40-60 percent above January rates during peak spring break weeks.
Alternatives for March that avoid spring break: Oaxaca, Mexico City, Merida, Guanajuato, and the Pacific coast (Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos) see far less spring break impact. On the Caribbean side, Bacalar, Holbox, and Isla Mujeres maintain a calmer atmosphere. Tulum has shifted increasingly toward a design-hotel and wellness crowd that partly displaces the spring break demographic, but prices are still elevated.

Dry season continues across most regions. The Riviera Maya is warm at 28-31 C with very low rainfall and bright skies. The Pacific coast is similar. Mexico City and the central highlands are dry and warm at 22-26 C. Humidity starts building in some coastal areas toward the end of the month, signalling the approaching transition.
Mérida in the Yucatan interior reaches 35-38 C by late March — the heat becomes a factor for all-day sightseeing. Time outdoor activities for early morning and late afternoon.
Air quality in Mexico City
March and April typically see the worst air quality in Mexico City. Temperature inversions trap pollution over the Valley of Mexico, and the lack of rain means particulates accumulate. The IMECA air quality index (available online) monitors levels daily. Visibility from viewpoints like Chapultepec Castle or the Latin American Tower can be poor on bad days, and outdoor exercise is sometimes inadvisable when readings are high. If air quality is a concern, check forecasts before booking a March CDMX trip.
Wildlife
Whale sharks begin arriving off Holbox and the northern tip of the Yucatan in small numbers from late March. The full aggregation peaks in July-August, but early arrivals make tours possible by the end of the month. Numbers are low enough that encounters feel intimate rather than crowded with tour boats.
Grey whales are still present in Baja California lagoons (Scammon’s, San Ignacio) through early-to-mid March. The calves born in January are now more active and playful, making late-season encounters particularly rewarding. The season typically ends by mid-to-late March as the whales begin their northward migration to Alaska.
Monarch butterflies remain in the Michoacan sanctuaries through March, though numbers decline as the butterflies begin dispersing for their northward migration. Early March is still worthwhile; by late March the colonies have thinned considerably.
Semana Santa (dates vary: late March or April)
If Easter falls early, Semana Santa processions and events begin in late March. This is one of the most significant periods in the Mexican calendar — beaches fill with domestic tourists, flights spike in price, and colonial cities host elaborate religious processions.
Taxco has the most dramatic Semana Santa in Mexico, with hooded penitents carrying heavy crosses through cobblestone streets at night, accompanied by candlelit processions. Oaxaca features alfombras — intricate carpets made from coloured sand, flowers, and sawdust — laid on streets for the processions to walk over. San Cristobal de las Casas has processions that blend Catholic and indigenous Tzotzil Maya elements.
Book accommodation very early if travelling during Semana Santa — popular destinations sell out months in advance, and prices reach annual highs in resort areas.
Cenote swimming
March is an excellent month for cenotes. The dry season means groundwater is clear with minimal sediment, and the heat makes underground swimming pools particularly appealing. The most popular cenotes near Tulum (Gran Cenote, Cenote Azul, Cenote Calavera) are busiest during spring break — arrive before 9 am or visit lesser-known cenotes further from the tourist corridor for a better experience.
What to do in March
Best for dry-season Caribbean: go in the first two weeks before the peak spring break arrivals, or accept the crowds in exchange for reliably excellent weather.
Best alternative: Oaxaca in March is excellent — the craft villages surrounding the city (Teotitlan del Valle, San Bartolo Coyotepec) are accessible, Hierve el Agua is manageable before the heat intensifies, and the city itself is at its most comfortable temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Should I avoid Cancún in March because of spring break?
- Only if you dislike a party atmosphere. Spring break in Cancún's Hotel Zone means pool parties, bar crawls, and crowded beaches from mid-February through late March. If that's not your scene, base yourself in Isla Mujeres, Bacalar, or Holbox, or visit Oaxaca and Mexico City instead — they're far less affected.
- When does Semana Santa fall in March?
- Semana Santa only falls in March if Easter is early (as in 2024, when Easter was 31 March). Most years, Semana Santa falls in April. Check the specific year you're travelling. If Semana Santa overlaps with your March trip, book accommodation months ahead — prices peak across beach destinations.
- Is March good for cenotes?
- March is excellent for cenotes — the dry season means minimal runoff, and water clarity in Yucatán cenotes is at its annual best. Heat makes the cool underground water very appealing. Arrive before 9 am at popular cenotes near Tulum to beat spring break tour groups.
- What wildlife is active in Mexico in March?
- Whale watching in Baja continues through early-to-mid March (last grey whales in San Ignacio). Monarch butterflies are still in Michoacán through early March before beginning their northward migration. Whale sharks begin appearing off Holbox in small numbers from late March.
