Oaxaca International Airport (IATA: OAX), officially Aeropuerto Internacional Xoxocotlán, is a small, manageable airport serving one of Mexico’s most culturally rich cities. It handles direct flights from Mexico City (multiple daily), Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, and US routes including Los Angeles and Houston. The terminal is compact - arrivals and departures share a single building.
The city centre is just 8–9 km north. This short distance means even at peak prices, transport from OAX is among the cheapest airport-to-city journeys in Mexico.
Authorised Airport Taxis
Inside OAX arrivals, the Taxis Autorizados (SITIO) booth sells fixed-rate vouchers by zone. Pay at the counter and hand the slip to the driver waiting at the kerb. The fare is all-inclusive - do not pay the driver additionally.

All fares are per vehicle, carrying up to 4 passengers. Journey time to the Zócalo is typically 15–20 minutes in normal traffic. Sunday mornings can be slower as markets and cultural events affect central access roads. During rush hour (7–9 am, 5–7 pm), allow 25–30 minutes.
Important: Oaxaca airport sees fewer aggressive touts than larger Mexican airports, but some unofficial drivers still solicit arrivals outside the building. Always purchase your voucher at the official counter inside before exiting.
Colectivos (Shared Vans)
For budget-conscious travellers with minimal luggage, colectivo vans from Highway 175 provide the cheapest link to the city. From the airport terminal, walk approximately 5 minutes to the highway intersection where colectivos pick up passengers heading north toward the city.
Colectivo fares (per person, as of 2026):
- Second-class bus terminal (La Unión area): MXN $15–25
- Central de Abastos market area: MXN $15–25
From the second-class terminal, the city centre is a further 20-minute walk or a MXN $40–60 local taxi ride.
Realistic use case: The colectivo makes sense only for travellers with a small backpack and plenty of time. With luggage, the official taxi is faster, simpler, and not dramatically more expensive.
Rideshare (Uber, DiDi)
Uber operates in Oaxaca city but availability at OAX is inconsistent. The airport’s relatively low passenger volume means drivers are not always circling nearby, and some drivers decline airport pickups. During peak season (November for Día de los Muertos, December, Semana Santa), the situation improves. Surge pricing is significant during these periods - fares can run 2–3x normal level.
If you want to try rideshare from OAX:
- Open the app before landing to see whether drivers are available in the area
- Uber/DiDi pickup at OAX is from the arrivals exit - there is no dedicated app zone
- Fare to the city centre: approximately MXN $80–150
DiDi has a stronger presence in Oaxaca than Uber and is worth trying as an alternative.
Given the modest price difference between rideshare and the official taxi (often MXN $50–80), the authorised taxi booth is the lower-friction choice for most arrivals.
Private Transfer
Private transfers make more sense here than at Mexico City or Cancún - OAX is a compact airport and there are no complex terminal layouts to navigate. The primary advantage of a pre-booked transfer is the named-driver greeting in arrivals and knowing your fare in advance.
Private transfers are especially useful for:
- Early morning / late night arrivals when colectivos are scarce
- Large groups needing a van
- Direct transfers to Monte Albán, Hierve el Agua, or other archaeological sites

For the long journey to Puerto Escondido (4–5 hours over mountain roads), a pre-booked private driver with local knowledge of the route is strongly recommended.
Car Rental at OAX
Hertz, Budget, Alamo, and local operators have counters at the terminal. Day rates from approximately MXN $500–800 for a standard vehicle.
Rental car advantages in Oaxaca:
- Craft village route (Tlacolula Valley): San Bartolo Coyotepec (black pottery), Teotitlán del Valle (rugs), San José el Mogote - easy by car, complicated by bus
- Monte Albán: Independent access without tour group timing
- Hierve el Agua petrified waterfalls: 70 km on a winding mountain road - tours go here but driving yourself allows early access before crowds
- Sierra Norte villages: Road conditions vary; ask your rental company about unpaved sections
Note: Oaxaca city centre traffic is dense and parking is limited. Most hotels in the historic centre advise leaving rental cars at a day parking lot near the city edge. The centre itself is very walkable.
ADO Bus from Oaxaca City
The ADO bus station in central Oaxaca (Primera Clase, on Calzada Niños Héroes de Chapultepec) is your hub for onward travel. There is no ADO bus from the airport itself, but once you are in the city:

Scam Awareness at OAX
Oaxaca airport is relatively low-risk, but a few patterns apply:
- Unofficial taxi drivers: Men near the arrivals exit (outside the building) may offer competitive fares. These are not covered by the regulated system. The official counter is inside, before the exit.
- Tours sold on arrival: Some people inside the terminal offer “free assistance” with accommodation or tours. They work on commission from specific hostels or tour operators.
- Monte Albán “official tours”: Unofficial vendors outside the terminal pitch same-day tours to Monte Albán at inflated rates. Tours booked through legitimate operators in the city centre are typically 30–50% cheaper.
- Exchange desks: The single currency exchange at OAX offers worse rates than ATMs. The ATM inside arrivals is the better option for withdrawing MXN.
Practical Tips
- Only one ATM: The HSBC ATM in arrivals is the only machine at the terminal. Withdraw MXN before heading into the city - have cash on arrival for your taxi and tips.
- Festival period peaks: Día de los Muertos (31 Oct–2 Nov) and Guelaguetza (July) bring extremely heavy arrivals. Pre-book transfers for these periods. Surge pricing on rideshare apps can push fares 2–3x normal.
- Early morning flights: The 6 am Mexico City departures are popular. Rideshare availability at 4–4:30 am is very limited. Pre-book a taxi or use the official SITIO system for returns - your hotel can book a return taxi with a fixed fare, typically MXN $220–320 from the centre.
- Airport size: OAX is small - the queue for the taxi booth typically takes 5–15 minutes even with a full flight arriving. No need to rush from the gate.
- SIM card: There is no permanent carrier kiosk at OAX. Buy a Telcel SIM at Oxxo or Soriana in the city centre on arrival (approximately MXN $100–200).
- Altitude: Oaxaca city sits at approximately 1,550 m above sea level - significantly cooler than coastal airports. Arrivals from Cancún or Puerto Vallarta often underestimate this; have a layer accessible in your carry-on.
- Return journey: Allow 60 minutes before your flight from the city centre - OAX has a small security area that can back up when multiple flights depart simultaneously.
